"Dutch hotel owner Albert Diks (20th December, 1959) became fascinated by the castles of Spain, when vacationing there as a boy. In the winter of 1999, he and his wife, Margo Vereijken, came upon the derelict Catalan Castell d'Empordà – and bought it.
What they purchased was a ruin, uninhabited for 80 years – but also 800 years of vivid Catalan history. At some point Salvador Dalì himself had tried to swap paintings for this fine piece of Medieval real estate. The then owner made the mistake of his life when he did NOT agree, so Dalì bought a castle in nearby Pubol instead.
The restoration took 18 months, and in the spring of 2001 the idyllic Hotel Castell d'Emporda opened its doors for its first guests.
Diks' fascination for Napoleon Bonaparte began when he was only nine years old. His grandfather had a hand-written diary by an ancestor who had spent time in the Emperor's Grande Armée and had survived of one of the bloodiest battles ever: Waterloo…"
