…The Six Day War.

"On the eve of the Arab-Israeli war, 50 years ago this week, Israeli officials raced to assemble an atomic device and developed a plan to detonate it atop a mountain in the Sinai Peninsula as a warning to Egyptian and other Arab forces, according to an interview with a key organizer of the effort that will be published Monday.

The secret contingency plan, called a "doomsday operation" by Itzhak Yaakov, the retired brigadier general who described it in the interview, would have been invoked if Israel feared it was going to lose the 1967 conflict. The demonstration blast, Israeli officials believed, would intimidate Egypt and surrounding Arab states — Syria, Iraq and Jordan — into backing off.

Israel won the war so quickly that the atomic device was never moved to Sinai. But Mr. Yaakov's account, which sheds new light on a clash that shaped the contours of the modern Middle East conflict, reveals Israel's early consideration of how it might use its nuclear arsenal to preserve itself…"

Good for them. I'm sure anyone who has one has a plan.

News to me. I know they were ready and plans for them in the Yom Kippur War before things turned around.

The success of various elements of Operation Nickel Grass (especially the aviation elements) was enough to turn Golda Meir's thinking away from employing nukes.

Thank you, Nixon, for that.

Well, the Persians have to know. If they get nucs[probably from working with the Norks, if the intel is correct, and I believe it most likely is]they shouldn't even think about "nuclear sabre rattling" in the direction of Israel.

Plus Israel is surrounded by very much mostly Sunni and Iran is very much mostly Shia'. We all know that paradigm, between the 2 major strongly held beliefs of those factions. Mixed with tribal, ethnic, etc. differences. This situation will probably continue going on for a very long time. Nucs not withstanding …
So you have a number of dynamics going on. And I don't think the IDF has to use nucs to do what they have to do. To ensure Israel survives.

News to me as well -- I didn't know that Israel had a nuclear device until after 1967.

There is assuredly many things we don't know about this situation. However, I still find it a little hard to believe that the IDF had nucs as early as '48(?).

But like I said … there are many, many things we don't know about this and much other "classified" intel. Whether this is one of those … who knows ?

If you can get the uranium, any idiot with a college physics textbook could make an atomic bomb.

Making an air-droppable bomb is a whole different story!

The "rub" in this type of scenario, is if certain "groups" in that region, based on passed and current "performances"/predilections. If they got their hands on any radioactive material.

Load it up on a truck with HE … and drive into the middle of a major town. We all know the rest … sadly …
