Doesn't it seem silly to cart around all those useless howitzers? Why not just use a reduced powder charge to send off shells?

Hello All,
I have a desire to have 10 different shield designs within one EIR roman legion.
Basically one design per cohort.

Is that allowed or am I just being too left field?

This doesn't seem to be an issue for republican Romans.
Thanks

Republican Romans didn't care about howitzers.

sillypoint04 Jun 2017 10:31 p.m. PST

General, depends where on the spectrum you are. Personally, I would have no problems. 😜

VVV reply04 Jun 2017 11:36 p.m. PST

Republican Romans mostly supplied their own equipment, just like the Greeks, so no problem there.
I think Imperial Roman armies had different background colours per cohort but the same design. I think they would have used something like a stencil for the design (not believing that they would have artists attached to the legion).

I don't understand how this got double posted and combined with ancients. It did get hung up for a while, never moved and then popped up again. I also don't understand how they get people's voices to come out of that black thing that hangs on the wall.

Perhaps the bug would like us to talk about Romans having howitzers? Maybe they would have ruled the world.

They did rule the world….

Allowed and historically accurate are two different things. I think the consensus would be that it is probably not accurate. They are your troops to with as you please. I don't think it would detract from anything; you could even argue that it is more pleasing to the eye.

I also like the Roman howitzer idea.

GurKhan05 Jun 2017 6:27 a.m. PST

The consensus is that each legion had its own shield design. That might have come with variations, such as different colours per cohort, but there is no direct evidence for such variation. But in fact the evidence for this consensus is quite scanty; clearly there was some sort of unit shield device, but at what level is less clear. Vegetius, who is of course a late and unreliable source, seems to imply designs on a per-cohort basis. So yes, you could do it. Expect to have to defend your choice from time to time, though.

That's Boris.

What's with this "allowed" nonsense?
Who died and appointed the "allowed" Czar boss?

Do what you wanted. They're your toy soldiers, not anybody else's.

foxweasel05 Jun 2017 11:44 a.m. PST

Do what you want. No one actually knows, and all the informed guesses are still guesses. All of mine are red with wings and thunderbolts, just because I like the classic semi Hollywood look.

There is surely some way to distinguish legions or legions from different parts of the empire in early imperial times, because Tacitus describes Roman legionaires picking up the shields of dead enemies to pass and get behind enemy lines somewhere in the Year of the Four Emperors. But beyond that, we seem to have a VERY high ratio of guesswork to evidence.I would certainly try to distinguish my cohorts in a game which fielded multiple cohorts--by design, by pattern--or, these being miniatures, by pose. And note there are always detached cohorts wandering around, surely attached to someone on the day of battle. But Winston's right: the worst punishment allowed is mockery by your peers, which hasn't killed any of us yet.

Of the rules don't disallow howitzers, then you can have them. But the Britons get fast-attack hoverbikes…

Roderick Robertson Fezian05 Jun 2017 3:53 p.m. PST

Oh, yeah, say "hi" to the bug. You'll get used to it.

Firstly, thank you all.

Secondly, what is this talk of howitzers? Has my post cross-pollinated with another post???

Thirdly, I like the idea of many different shield background colours with the same design on top.

Also though maybe I'd stick with one design and change the colours of the tunics instead.

I'm kinda worried if I go to far they might be hard to on-sell in the future.
