In March 1862, the AotP introduced flags designating its corps, divisions, brigades and regiments. I have a rough understanding of the system, but does anyone know what the 4th brigade in a division was supposed to carry? I can only find information for the first three brigades. Many thanks. |

I thought it was 1863. I swear I've read that the system was not thought to be completely intact at Gettysburg.. tmg110.tripod.com/usuacf.htm |

There were 1861 flags on the French lines, and then a change in the ordnance for 63, but not all brigades used, them then according to Hanncock commenting on a Gettysburg painting. They do though make the game easier when it comes to identifying units, I have 61 for Cedar Mountain & 63 flags in 12mm for my other games. |

Beyond being a terrific blog to follow, this has flags that show the 4th brigade flags: link |

General Orders No. 102, 24 March 1862 (Official Records, Vol. 11, Part 3, pp. 33-36), has no provisions for a fourth brigade. The order of battle for the Army of the Potomac on 6 April 1862 (OR, Vol. 11, Part 1, pp. 279-284) also indicates that no division in the army actually had a fourth brigade. By the time any fourth brigades were present the system had fallen into disuse. When Hooker re-introduced designating flags in 1863 the new system included provisions for fourth brigades. |

Be careful with the link that Piquet Rules provided. Many of these are horribly inaccurate. Not blaming Piquet. |

"Not blaming Piquet." Thanks! I'm not used to not being blamed. |

LOL even if they were not used it help with the wargaming side of the topic. I use one regiment in my CSA force with a state flag this also help keep an eye on things. At Cedar Mountain 1862 General Rickets division had 4 brigades :-) There was also 2 Corps 1st Division, this unit had 4 brigades at Gettysburg. |

By Gettysburg the new flag system devised by Dan Butterfield had been instigated (although some units might not have been using it yet). |

I'm thinking to just print them out and make markers without figures to show and keep track of units |

In the summer of 1862 there were two divisions in the Army of Virginia (which fought at Cedar Mountain and Second Bull Run) which had a fourth brigade. Ricketts' Division (3rd Division, III Corps) was not part of the Army of the Potomac until September 1862 and so the provisions of General Orders No.102 never were applicable. King's 1st Division of the III Corps only acquired its fourth brigade in June of 1862, again well after the issuance of G, O. No. 102, which besides did not apply to the units of the Army of Virginia. |
