"The U.S. Army Wants A New Heavy Dump Truck" Topic

"The U.S Army is inviting industry to compete for chance to build the service's new, armored dump trucks.

The Army intends to award a Single-Source Award, Firm-Fixed Price, Seven-year Indefinite Delivery, Indefinite Quantity commercial contract for the M917A3 Heavy Dump Truck, according to the May 26 solicitation.

The service plans to buy about 683 M917A3 armored dump trucks.

"The Army requires units with dependable and deployable M917A3s that have reduced operations and support costs and increased operational effectiveness and readiness over existing systems," according to the solicitation. "This is critical to support the Joint Forces as they conduct more operations in areas of the world with austere infrastructures and little or no host nation support. The M917A3 will be capable of supporting mobility, counter mobility, survivability and sustainment operations…"

I was expecting to see something about mining haul trucks; I guess this works as well. It's a decent-looking truck, but I'm surprised that there's no third axle; those have become just about standard for commercial over-the-road dump trucks.

I just spent this entire workweek designing roads for haul trucks at a surface mine, so forgive me for defaulting to thinking about that! The Army technically does have a surface mine at Fort Leonard Wood…

I would think that they would have to look at medium size vehicles. Firstly for transport purposes to and from the desired site. And secondly, to fit onto roads and bridges in far flung places that don't have a good infrastructure base to accommodate larger machinery.
