Topgun, with real life mimicking art, and having a Chinese "Maverick" flying upside down, over one of our recon birds, very closely, recently, over the South China Sea.

I've been told by D-Day first wave survivors that Saving Private Ryan's opening sequence was very realistic, and very difficult to watch. Also, Black Hawk Down… the brother of one of the guys in my unit was a Helo pilot as depicted in the movie. He too said it was difficult to watch the sequences in which the Helos were brought down. HE also said that there were waaaaaayyyyy more RPG's shot at the helos than depicted in the movie.

Definitely BHD, particularly if you have the bonus disc as ro how rhe actirs were trained to operate.

Isn't cheating to use a documentary as the nr 1 spot?

But generally I agree with it (which isn't usual with those kinda lists.
Black hawk down also got audio commentary from sevral of the vets from the battle. Well worth watching, they too point out that there was ALOT more RPGs out and flying that day.

I can see why Restrepo won #1.
One movie they missed, which an ex Lt. who served in Viet Nam friend of mine endorsed as realistic was the Thin Red Line. In particular the inter-reaction among the officers.

Some of the episodes of The Pacific were very realistic.

Band of Brothers – Not a movie, but close.

Band of Brothers IS one of the 10 :)

Watched 4/5ths of directors cut Das Boot yesterday, nog a sailor but has to be up there. Never saw Restrepo so interested to see it, Come and See is saying full movie on YouTube and will check it it asap. To much on tablet and don't want to lose any information but if 9th Company is a Russian movie I saw it, very good. Saving Private Ryan first 30 minutes minus flamethrowers must be excellent but the boy scout hiking trip through occupied France looses me.
And only saw a few episodes of Generation Kill :(
I'm going to watch Come and See but its a bad copy the likes I have seen before on YouTube, heads are cut off for instance. But it seems English dubed so thats a plus. I have watched dozens of Russian movies without English language or captions.

Black Hawk Down is one that I like to watch.

The Opening scene in Saving Private Ryan is incredible. I don't like the rest of it as much. I don't care for movies where no one gets wounded, only killed. People have taken horrendous injuries and still survived!

I'm kind of surprised Platoon didn't make the list.

A good chunk of those you posted are totally unrealistic.

Dr. Strangelove

Although a comedy, the depiction of how an aircrew interacts with each other in the performance of their duties is the best I've even seen duplicated in a movie. The way the crew ran checklists and communicated with each other is very realistic. Most aviation themed movies so over dramatize the actions of the pilot and crew in the cockpit as to be completely unbelievable to anyone who has ever professionally flown an airplane. An example would be if the planes engine was on fire. Most movies would show the pilot screaming on his radio that his engine is on fire. Every pilot knows that screaming does not put out the flames and that no one receiving your radio transmissions is going to be able to help you, so there is no point in even talking on the radio until the event is over and you have put a plan in place.

Finished Come and See, it filled my quota for misery but not putting it up as top movies but is probably very realistic.

Come and see, director and film crew used live ammunition! That was a film that literally made my skin crawl. Generation war was hard to watch also. And I think the best 'mind destroyed' film has to be Jarhead. It fit my experiences in GW and Honduras to a T. Boredom, stupidity and incompetent commanders coupled in a cause that means absolutely nothing to you or your immediate mates, leads to that hollow despair you see so well at the end of Jarhead. Combine 'burning man, LSD, and live ammo, and you pretty much have it down. Add the stink and the fact your friends are getting whacked. Never mind that, when we get beck to KAF, we'll get a subway--------😶

As a former US Army tanker I gotta say "Fury" was pretty close.
