"The Philippine military says it has made gains retaking Marawi city from Islamist militants amid clashes that have left about 100 people dead.

According to the military, militants now control only small pockets within the southern Philippine city.

Rodrigo Duterte doesn't play games nor care about such notions as everyone having the basic right of being treated equally under the law. If his ruthless war on drugs is any indication of how he's prosecuting the war on Islamic extremism, it should be over quickly.

Ruthless doesn't pay the bills. Killing a whole lot of people only helps if it is the right people that you kill. Also, the operation started with the attempted arrest of one of the terrorist leaders. It doesn't sound like that happened.

In baseball, homerun hitters strike out and pop out more often than they score. They grab headlines and sell tickets but don't usually last a long time.
