I like these Valero, Javier Gomez, Painting Wargaming Figures, (Pen & Sword Military, 2015) Javier Gomez Valero is a professional figure painter who paints under the name of "El Merciano". His book explains techniques for painting wargames figures including very useful highlighting and shading guides using the popular Vallejo Model Colour paints. Priestly, Rick, Games How to paint Citadel Figures, (Games Workshop, 2004) Games Workshop is the biggest company in the wargames industry and provides some excellent guides and tutorials in their books and magazines. This is a very good book, but as you would expect, strongly biased to their own figures, paints, and tools. Many Games Workshop rulebooks contain a summary of this book. |

The Kevin Dallimore ones by Foundry 0- get the first introductory one first. Does 28mm up but should be applicable to 15mm figures as well. Does rely to an extent on the Foundry paint system (shade, base, light) but has options for simple base and wash. |

Here are the details for Kevin Dallimore's first book. I met Kevin at Salute and he said that the book is currently out of print. You may be able to find it used on Amazon. Dallimore, Kevin, Foundry Miniatures Painting and Modelling Guide, (Foundry, 2009) Kevin Dallimore is a master painter of 28mm figures and the designer of Foundry's paint system. His book contains hundreds of pictures and explains in detail how to paint like a pro. The book features only Foundry paints and figures. |

I'd second the recommendation for Javier Gomez Valero's book, beautifully illustrated, very well organised, and extremely helpful. His painting service is called 'El Mercenario' by the way. Mollinary |

The Army Painter has several free painting guides available on their website. thearmypainter.com The guides naturally focus on using The Army Painter's line of paints, primers, and washes, but hey, they are free and downloadable as PDF files. |

The Painting War series are very good. They specialise in particular periods, but the general principles of flesh tones, woodwork and shading apply to any period. Usually just 28mm and 15mm. |

"You can forget about the Dallimore guide … it is out of print." Wow and just look at those secondhand values….. I'm holding on to my signed copy. You can get quite a bit for free on Kevin's own site; link Tony |

You can find the first Dallimore book on eBay or Abebooks or other sellers, you just have to be patient and hunt around for it. I managed to snag a copy for $35 USD. The older Games Workshop book on how to paint minaitures is well done and accessible for beginners too. |
