Just finished watching the new Netflix movie, "War Machine," with Brad Pitt. This is a VERY thinly veiled parody of how GEN McCrystal was relieved because a Rolling Stones writer reported on the back room conversations of the general's personal staff. There are some funny moments, but overall I struggled to watch the whole two hours. Leaving aside the blatant "in-your-face" lecturing, it was just plain boring. (Pitt does a good acting job, of course.) But the reality is it's a boring movie that refights the Vietnam War (yes, I said Vietnam) with many of the same hoary clichés. The detached president who pays no attention to his military, the state department weenies who don't want to win the war but magically want it to just go away, the common soldiers who don't understand why they're there, and their military leaders who are interested in their own careers. The only hero in the movie is the narrator who turns out to be the Rolling Stones writer (surprise!) who's story led to McCrystal's relief. Oh, and the big lesson, don't fight insurgents. You can't win. |

So you're saying it's liberal polemics on the futility of our military involvement in the Mideast. And I clicked on this thread thinking this guy finally got his own spin-off movie.

Thanks, what I figured it would be since many of Netflix's original movies have so far been predictably and boringly "progressive" in nature. |

Actually, it wasn't the politics…it was extremely preachy in several ways. It was just a boring retread of common issues…and it was boring. I was ready to turn if off half way through. The ONLY hero in the movie is the Rolling Stones reporter who narrates the whole movie. He has deep insightful wisdom on everything under the sun, and everyone else in the movie is a paper cardboard cliché. Really gets old. But in the end, you've already seen this move a dozen times; only the names have changed. |

I liked it. It was not am exciting movie by any means. But, the military's group-think buzzwording was spot on. I had to laugh at Pitt's mannerisms. |

As it is on Netflix I might watch it And – with all due respect – you can beat insurgents – in fact, historically insurgents have rarely won; the trick is you need to want to beat them and be prepared to be there for the long, long haul |

And not simply make more insurgents by bombing civilians willy nilly. |
