If you watch She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, you will see that almost all of the trooper's scarves are not yellow, but rather blue and white or red and white, or something very drab. I think that Lt Pennell's is yellow but that is the only such one I recall. Ford had it right (or at least his wardrobe chief did. The army did not issues scarve (yellow or otherwise) to its troopers. Whichever scarf they wore, they bought at the post's sutler store or at a mercantile in some town. I guess farmers and cowboys weren't big into yellow scarves so therefore the troops bought what was available, usually red and while or blue and white.

Wow, those look great. I run a very cinematic "John Fordesque" cowboy game in 28mm. Makes me want step up to 54mm.

I must agree that 54mm is the way to go for Old West gunfights. You should see peoples' eyes light up when they see the toys of their youth on the gaming table: "Oh my, I remember those!"

This is very tempting. As a wee lad in the 60s, I killed many an enemy with my cap-gun and my favorite playset was the Marx Fort Apache Carry-All.

They way I got into 28mm Cowboys was utilizing the painted eM4 Western and Dunwich Detective sets to get rolling (adding hundreds of eventually self-painted miniatures over time).

So, I wonder what painted 54mm miniatures exist that I could jump-start with?
