I am looking for some advice on which way to go. I have determined that a 20mm frontage is way too small for 28mm cavalry and I am going to go wider for subsequent projects.

25mm is the standard but as I base infantry in a 20mm frontage it is easier to get a standard width with 30mm frontage for cavalry but I am thinking 30mm is too wide. One of the guys in the club uses 30mm so that is what has got me thinking.

Thoughts?

I base two 28mm cavalry on a 50mm square base.

That would be the same as 25mm frontage, just not as "granular".

I prefer single basing anyway. So anyone who likes multi-figure basing won't read this.

25mm looks best, imho. 30mm is too much space between the figures.

20mm works well for infantry. Some of mine are on 25mm bases, though. And 25mm for infantry looks good. But I will continue to base mostly on 20mm.

I use a mix of 25 x 50 singles and 50 x 50 doubles for my cavalry units.

A lot will depend on your favoured ruleset(s).

Casualty removal or not.

Differing unit formations.

Sabot bases for differing unit footprints.

I prefer 25mm frontages for 28mm cavalry. I base mine on 25mm by 50mm pill shaped bases.

I use Perry Brother mounted which come with 60mmX45mm standard bases (and also 20X45mm for individual figures).

I'm not having any trouble getting them to fit on the bases that come in the box. 20mm frontage works fine (remember medevial knights formed stirup to stirup).

Second best choice is 2 figures on 60mmX45 base, unless your doing 1-1 skirmish.

Depends on the troop type. Close order fighting cavalry at 25mm frontage, skirmisher cavalry at 30mm frontage.

25mm frontage for me. I base two on a 50mmx50mm base.

I base mine on 25mm or 20mm, depending on the era, rule system and miniature. For close packed units even 25mm looks too wide to mn.
