This Month at Broadsword 3, I played my third game of DBA. The battle pitted Spartans against Athenians. I played the Spartans.

Head on over to Must Contain Minis to read more about this battle and my impressions on the system. link

Good report.

If the DBA Fanaticus forum was not mentioned to you, there you will find a lot of information covering armies, painting, scratch building terrain and structures, battle reports and more.

Thank you for the AAR. I have never heard of the 'wavering Line' rule[s], though it has been ages since I played a game of DBA or X?

I think Must Contain Minis is referring to how a shieldwall in DBA tends to look after a round or two of combat, with various stands either standing or recoiling. There are no "wavering line" rules in DBA, McLaddie.

Although two lines of spear facing each other are still much more staid than, say warband or knights facing each other. A couple of rounds of combat with such impetuous troop types, and your whole battle line has dissolved into a swirling mess of individual melees.

Tony S is absolutely right. There is no "wavering line" rule. I am just describing how the lines shift back and forth and break off into individual fights while playing. :)

The game I played was DBA 3rd Edition.

The overlap rule is pretty much a "waivering lines" rule. As elements get recoiled, and the line is uneven, differenrt units will be subject to -1 for being overlapped, making it more likely they will break.

Nice report, thanks for sharing. As I'd like to introduce newcomers to the game, I would be interested in knowing what modifications were made to make such an introduction easier.

Did you have a preset battlefield, as it's rare that in a typical game there are no terrain features in the center. Did you do without camps as well.

One of the nice features of DBA three Is the shield wall. Spears such as in your game get a plus one if they have a friendly spear next to them . At the start of a battle between lines of spears everybody gets the plus one, but it has some elements lose and recoil, only one side would get the plus And the other side would get a negative for being overlap as well. Otherwise a battle between Spears each at +5 combat factor would keep pushing back-and-forth for a long time.

That close-up of the two Psiloi versus one makes it look bad for that one. Another interesting new rule is that Ps cannot be overlapped so they actually just fight one to one.

All in all a nice looking game and write up.
