Last week we dusted off the To the Strongest rules and Dave brought his lovely collection of Romans and Goths along for the boys to play with. A good game followed which was done and dusted in less than 2 hours.
More pics of Daves lovely figures with a few notes on the game thrown in here- Empires at War Blog Thanks for looking. Mick |

Like the massed look of the 28mm (I presume) figures on the big bases. Jim |

What a great looking game! A couple of questions if you don't mind. How many units of what type were used in the Late Roman army? Who manufactured those gorgeous figures? Thanks, BR |

BR I've asked Dave for the info. Cheers Mick |

Enjoyed looking at the pictures. Like the overall look of the game and the gaming surface looks great. I think I like prefer the solid lines of advancing troops in Hail Caesar or Impetus versus the segmented look in this game (caused by using squares for movement.) I suppose that smaller squares would work fine? |
BigRedBat | 23 May 2017 12:14 p.m. PST |
Absolutely MB; ideally the square needs to be larger than the unit but not much larger. I personally use units that are around 10% smaller than the width of the square- 13.5cm units with 15cm grid and 18cm units with 20cm grid. Or one could get a grid to match the unit width; I can order them from Deep-Cut in bespoke sizes. |

Lads, in total I probabaly have about twenty units of foot and ten of cavalry for each side with twelve infantry and six cavalry per base. These figures were originally painted twelve or so years ago, long before shield decals so the hand painted designs look a bit iffy! They were re based last year and I still have sub Roman Britons to do. Simon, the Late Romans had 5 non veteran legionary units with 1formed bow unit behind each for that bit of extra fire power. 2 medium cavalry and 2 skirmish cavalry. Figures are mainly Old Glory but with Foundry and Gripping Beast thrown in. More pics here: link Dave |

Shame on you Dave, you know the rules, Neal only gets to win when he's the British (any era). |

Dave, Thanks for the info and the link to your blog. I notice there are what appears to be four infantry units in the second line. Are the legionary or auxiliary units? |
Sheepman1961 | 23 May 2017 3:16 p.m. PST |
I had them as auxiliary for this encounter, I may be wrong but I think it was just about morale standards, don't think there was much difference in uniform at this time. It's one of the things I like about the period, all units of both sides are very interchangeable, I also have Huns by the way but you need a very large table in 28mm to use them correctly! Dave |
