Which ruleset is your favorite in the Avalon Hill Squad Leader type of game?

* Squad Leader
* Advanced Squad Leader
* Fireball Forward
* Combat Commander
* Schwere Kompanie
etc.

ASL.

Combat Commander

ASL, but for someone looking for most of ASL without nearly the same rules overhead Schwere Kompanie is the way to go. You could practically play every ASL scenario with that rules set.

SL the very first, still without Tanks and all those extra rules, and after that CrossFire and Force on Force

Actually, I think Academy Games Conflict of Heroes series is the best.

Conflict of Heroes operates at the same scale, fewer rules and less clunky game sequencing. The big bonus is the use of chits and cards to reduce CRTs to almost none. A few die rolls where the relevant info is carried on the counters. Plus simpler LOS rules etc. and if you miss an expansion you are not out in the cold or forced to pay hundreds of dollars on eBay.

I enjoyed SL a lot back in the day

Another vote for Conflict of Heroes. Stephen hit on the high points.

Er…wouldn't that be ASL?

SL without the tanks. They really killed the rules.

Wargamer Blue22 May 2017 10:55 p.m. PST

Combat Commander. My favorite game to play.

NUTS! is my favorite rules for WW2 squad/platoon level actions.

Timotheous24 May 2017 6:08 p.m. PST

I liked SL + Cross of Iron the best. Never could get on with ASL. Too complex for me.

Michael Hatch26 May 2017 6:40 a.m. PST

Schwere Kompanie for the win!

(Leftee)26 May 2017 9:28 p.m. PST

Fireball Forward – keeps the fun in the game.

Powermonger29 May 2017 5:47 a.m. PST

Conflict of Heroes has my vote

alphus9913 Jun 2017 10:47 a.m. PST

Anyone know how to get hold of Schwere Kompanie? The Paypal link here doesn't seem to work (and there's no price either)

@alphus99

The ruleset is 15 USD. You need a paypal account. The Buy Now link should take you to the sign in screen.

Timotheous I agree. Anyone play old school tactical? I like that

huron725 Supporting Member of TMP01 Apr 2018 3:17 p.m. PST

Of the 5 you've mentioned: SL

I really like the simplicity of the Lock n Load series of games.

GGouveia23 Apr 2018 10:27 a.m. PST

Original SL without all the extra complexities.

Dexter Ward01 May 2018 2:42 a.m. PST

Original Squad Leader, with the minimum added rules needed. The armour rules in Cross of Iron are good, all the stuff like bore sighting, bypass movement and half squads is a nightmare and should be avoided.
