I am considering building a new wargaming table. My present table is 7 feet wide and 16 feet long. I have a parallel side table three feet wide and 12 feet long. I am hoping for a significantly larger table space.

Presently my tables are covered with green indoor/outdoor carpeting. I like that surface and it has held up well for nearly 30 years of very heavy use. Still, re-carpeting that would be expensive.

What other surfaces would you suggest that might be durable, functional, and inexpensive?

Menards sells an impressive indoor/outdoor green carpet, called, Foss(R) Tee Time. It is in their carpeting/flooring section. It comes on a roll, 6-feet wide, any length needed. I bring this up because it is softer, and more grass-like, than anything I've seen yet. I plan on switching to it when I get my new table, later this year.

It is a few $$ more than the scratchy green carpet I have now, but once you put your hand to it, I think you will like it. Go to their stores, if you have one nearby, or look on the Internet to see if you can find a retailer near you, who carries it.

I've been using a rougher, green, indoor/outdoor carpet piece for over 20 years, on top of my Ping Pong Table, 9' x 5'. It looks the same, today, as it did when I bought it. I can't wear it out with gaming. I expect the new, Tee Time, to be similar in wear and tear. For me, the new Tee Time is da' Bomb. Cheers!

Green felt – 50% off, frequently, at Joann Fabrics.

You can get it in 6' wide rolls, too.

Update: the Foss Tee Time carpet is $0.49 USD/sq. ft., regular price. Should help you decide on price, but touch it, first; mottled green colors, soft to the touch… Great stuff, IMHO. Cheets!

Canvas. Paint it. Play on it. Pin it to the sides to give it a good stretch. Tired of how it looks? Paint over it. Then do it again. Artist canvas can be bought in quite long rolls, a bit more expensive but more versatile than carpet – in my opinion. You might even get lucky at yardage (fabric) shop and find some on sale. Just remember, canvas can and does shrink when painting it – did I sail pin it? Maybe nail it good before painting it.
