"Have you been enticed back by GW lately?" Topic

It seems like I'm seeing a lot of posts by people on all kinds of different forums about returning to GW. Between Shadow War and the changes upcoming for 8th people really seem to like the direction that GW is going right now.

I was brought back by AoS and returned to 40K when they brought out plastic Horus Heresy figures (of which I just bought my 6th boxed game the other day.)

It hasn't just been here, although I've seen a lot of comments here, it has also been an uptick of GW related posts on Lead Adventure (which for a while seemed to shun anything that wasn't GW from the 80s) and on reddit/r/warhammer40K as well. One guy was back after 23 years posting pictures of his Thousand Sons.

So are you back, are you trying it now for the first time and why?

No. In fact, I'm selling off all my GW stuff.

Well I'm not really sure if I went away, as I usually paint a few of my Tyranids every year, so much as just spending a lot more time with historical games. I did pick up some of the new AoS Khorne and I'm watching the 40k v8 hype blogs.

I was tempted by Blood Bowl, I must admit. But although the prices were relatively low for GW, they're higher than I'd ideally want to pay, and the "one week only!" limitation on the classic teams both precluded waiting until the next month when I could afford it better, and also put me off buying at all.

I'm also still sufficiently annoyed about the end of WFB that I feel disinclined to give them more custom than necessary.

It'll take a long time for GW to win me back, if at all. At the moment I'm still revelling in the feeling of having escaped from the basement/cave/<insert other metaphor here> and realising there's a whole world of other wargames out there.

I still buy their aerosol paints. Most of my existing paint set is Citadel but a few years old, so when those come round for replacement I might go elsewhere.

Sorta, my interest waned when with the content overload a few years back so I scaled way back. My boys started getting interested in 40k prior to news of the new 40k so we started breaking out the models again.

So I am probably be back because of that. I think with the new rules I am a bit more excited about the prospect.

Never was with them, and still, no.

Never really left but would consider myself an Oldhammer type of guy. If I buy any of their newer stuff its normally second hand and I look to proxy a lot of stuff from other manufacturers when I can because GW prices are often a bit to much for me.

A lot of the newer releases haven't really floated my boat if I'm honest.

Except for the occasional game of Necromunda and Space Hulk,I was never into GW. I do own some of their figs however, and my love of skirmish games tipped me to purchase SW:A. It might end up in our group's regular schedule now.

Always loved the fluff and the figs, but this is getting me back into the rules, for the first time since 2nd ed and Necromunda.

Nope. Prices per figure (and especially per vehicle) are still too high to expand my son's Crimson Fists, although it's been a while since I checked Orc prices.

Serious question here, although I realize it might sound like a typical troll: will the new edition "reset" include a lowering of prices for people buying individual sets? (i.e. not starter or army boxes)

I have bought some of their new miniatures and will likely buy a few BIG space marines… but I tend to buy a box from them occasionally anyway.

No, I have given AoS a look, and 30K even more so, but GW's current figure style mostly leaves me flat. AOS armies and figs don't speak to me at all. I really don't get the appeal of them.

My favorite GW figs are the old IG guys, and I had hoped that maybe they would create a place for something closer to them in 30K, but didn't find that. In 40k, Cadians are just absent of character, some of their friends do a little better, but stylistically, I don't like any of them. In my mind, the grunts are the soul of the army, and GW's grunts don't have any soul. Really a bummer, as if I was playing GW, my local gaming opportunities would increase exponentially.

Never got into GW but the pics of their games and minis always get my attention. The painting is usually really good and the figures are nice, I even got Tyranids for my xenomorph army. The GW retail prices keep me away though.

Never played any of their games, but have some Tyranids for our sci-if games.

I have so much invested in GW that it makes financial sense to linger on the sidelines and wait to see how this new version turns out. I have interest to remain connected to GW because it brought a connection between me and my sons. Over time, though, the high prices, overly large models that would dominate tabletops, poor sculpting, finecasting, etc., caused disenchantment. That disenchantment facilitated my return to historicals…

I guess I will have to see.

Brought back by Blood Bowl, SW:A, 40K 8th info. Also, ever-increasing evidence that after decades, GW was finding it's ass.

Now, if they could do something about arbitrary, ridiculous prices (or at least a fraudulent exchange rate), I'd be happy.

Though I have been long fighting back a desire to dust off my old minis for Necromunda and Mordheim- scale 40k & WHFB. I was planning on starting last January, but then BB was released, and rumors behind SW:A's spiritual succession were flying about.

For AOS I agree with Irishserb. There is nothing that intrigues me at all with AOS. I want to play a game that is set in a world that is like LOTR with regular humans, goblins, elves, dwarves etc. AOS is not that kind of game nor is it that kind of theme, and the models don't hold my imagination at all. My old metal High Elves from the 5th edition do more for me than anything made recently.

This is where I am at with 40K and I have been with WFB for longer. I will occasionally add a few things to my armies from time to time if I see something that I want to get, but I am not exactly buying whole armies like I once did. That may change with the new edition, but we will have to see if I like the game or not.

I came back to 40k for Shadow War. I'd sold off my Space Marine army three years ago but Shadow War requires so few miniatures that I bought the rulebook and a box of Orks for a squad.

Age of Sigmar figures have killed my interest in their fantasy line and sadly in Black Library too as they follow that timeline.

Mind you I have nothing against the AoE rules although they did not grab me.

Not really. Years ago I bought some space marines and Cadians but the miniatures and the games fluff just left me cold. Still have them unpainted after 20 years. Was sort of attracted to Lost Patrol and picked up a second hand copy. Dumped the miniatures for others which I like. Did the same with Space Hulk back in the day. Price and the style/fluff of the 40K universe just does not do it for me.

No. In fact, with the exception of my Warhammer Ancient rules, I have sold off or given away all of the GW stuff. If they would start up with Warhammer Historicals, I might be enticed to go back.

Only GW interest was WHFB and Mordheim. No interest in the new fantasy version and Mordheim is fine as is after a few house rules. So they won't be getting anything from me at this point.

This. I am looking very carefully at 8th 40K. I have 6 massive Apoc sized armies (my orks and eldar remain unbuilt) and all of the attendant heavies to go with them that it makes no sense to abandon them. My Black Templars and Salamanders need some of those new Primaris marines.

Price. While they have a few good deals on minis now far too many are much too high. I can get good proxies far cheaper from many sources.

Skirmish. I'm more into big battles with horde armies. AOS seems more like a cage fight with too many heroes/monsters vs % of rank 'n' file.

Sculpts. i just can't get into many of the new designs. They are good sculpts but just not for me. WAY WAY WAY to 40k sci fi looking for me. A matter of taste and each has there own. Bottom line they simply don't appeal at all to me for the most part.

Finecast. I've not had any of the poorly cast figs but I do try to avoid them since they are fragile and not the best for ham-fisted handling during gaming. Go back to metal please!

Factions/names. Too much trouble to find what I want. Example: Skaven are broken up into so many small groups with different names… just too much effort.

Paints. Ditto. Still don't know what color XV-88 is and no longer care. is it blue or red?

Long term viability. I am pretty worn out with the my armies being made irrelevant when changes are made. I have too few or too many. Yes I could still play them but they just don't feel valid. Example, I collected a very large goblin army. Sadly "Common" goblins. Then Night Goblins come out. The rules make my choice a pretty poor investment now.

Too much. I am keeping my figs. They work just fine with the older editions and other rule sets.

Didn't night goblins hit in the very early 90's? You weren't able to make vanilla gobbos work back in 4th edition?

I have not, but I've been playing the One Page Rules games, which are obviously … uh … inspired by them. I use their Age of Fantasy with their LotR figures, and Grimdark Future with Epic figures mounted individually. (That just cries out for very simple rules.)

Now 40K seems to be going simpler, but I think OPR are ahead in simplicity. I'm not playing OPR in protest.

No, but I have taken an interest in the origins of Warhammer Fantasy, from the first three editions to Hero Quest and Battle Masters.

I've been painting a lot of GW stuff for a couple commissions, and generally enjoying it. That and your great posts are indeed tempting me.

But isnt that my point? 4th was just one edition from long ago. Subsequent editions change things up.

Who appreciates getting mocked for wanting an all goblin army using the same troops with the only difference being one wears robes? GW wanted to sell new Night Gobbos so the rules made them cheaper than Common Gobbos.

So, I am just not sure how this applies directly to 4th ed only since I was talking about the body of work changing through each edition.

Things like spears, hand weapons and shields being free just because. Common Gobbos didnt even come with hand weapons which means if you don't kit bash they are more work than many will do and again makes Night Gobbos a much cheaper choice. Me, I am crazy, I converted hand weapons on over 200 models.

As I am a professional figure painter, I paint a lot of their products, the sculpts are amazing, incredible figures. I use a lot of their paints and washes, and they have improved out of all recognition from the paints i struggled with in the 80/90s

Paints only for me. Model prices too high for what I like to game.

I never stopped painting their models or using their paints. AoS killed my interest in their fantasy game, but I'm going to buy the new WH40k rules to see how they go.

The only thing I've ever purchased from GW is a 25mm siege tower and a box of siege equipment accessories for my Army of Darkness assault on King Arthur's castle. Otherwise, GW doesn't make anything that interests me.
