Nice work Ed. Your magic highlights the miniature quite well.

Here is my first attempt at painting Honveds.

Thanks, gents.

Grey Heron, the paint job on that Honved figure is nothing short of splendid and displays superb technique. My hat off to you, sir.

Really nice – sorry to be a bore but the capercaille feathers in the hat were dark green not grey.

Ramming, interesting that you mention the green vs black feathers…therein lies a tale.

I noticed a contradiction in reference to the feather colors. My print sources all said that they were black, and illustrations in contemporary sources, like the Osprey on the Austrian Army Infantry, 1836-66, show black. Yet period illustrations seem to show the feathers as dark green.

I double checked and cross checked to try and reconcile this difference, but the only mention of green on the headgear that I could find was in regard to the later hat band going from black to green (which I dutifully painted green).

I looked for examples of how others had painted these figures and the ones I could find had black feathers (or appeared to in the pictures).

So, I decided on black, but I certainly was wondering about it.

I'd welcome any information on another refence with more definitve information on the topic.

Best,
Ed M

Hi Ed, I've held one in my hands, an 1866 Jaeger hat with the original feathers, v dark green. I'd always go with Knotel or Ottenfeld, usually their detail is perfect as the collecting audience might well have worn the very uniform illustrated. Quite a few here link

Ramming is right, but his photo shows why there is confusion! I am sure they varied enormously in real life, with some looking much more black than others.

All certainly valid. Thanks, gents!

I think what I'll do is strike a balance and paint one feather dark green in each plume grin

Try a thin dark green wash which will dry with a gloss finish.

How's this…
