I'm painting some British Navy sailors for the Boxer rebellion era. I'm a bit puzzled as to what colour the leg bindings/puttees/gaiter things should be. Black? White? Brown? Or a mixture depending on which ship? Any advice appreciated. |

Today, blancoed white anklets but then khaki brown gaiters. A Google search on "Boxer Rebellion Royal Navy" brings up some good pictures in the first couple of rows. |

Many thanks. The black and white photos suggested brown/khaki but in colour drawings I've seen white, black and brown! |

Now I've got to work out the equipment and knapsack etc colours! |

Leather belting was usually black for the RN, as I recall. Knapsacks and duffel bags would, I expect, be brown or natural canvass; but I'm sure some experts will weigh in shortly. I hope I'm remembering this right! NOW I see some miniature galleries showing naval personnel with brown leather equipment/belts! |

IF you are doing them specifically for the Boxer Rebellion, then you also have to remember that a lot of gear was sourced from whatever was in stores at the various Empires outposts. For instance the 'Australian' Naval Brigade was equipped with Canadian cold weather gear while on policing duties and were for a while mounted on Mongol ponies. |

Thanks. I've seen both brown and black leather equipment. I did see a mention of a blue-grey knapsack. I don't have anything in my book collection that's definitive and my google fu has just added to the confusion! I've got to do four units so maybe I'll mix it up a bit. |

Not sure of the date for this picture but it looks good and shows the equipment except the knapsack

Nice drawing of the equipment. What I assumed to be a knapsack may well be a blanket after all. So I guess the question is actually what colour was the blanket!

Badwargamer, the blanket would most likely be medium grey. Cheers, JB |

Many thanks. I went with grey in the end. Thanks very much for the reply though, muchly appreciated. |

Ah. I did post some in another thread. The blue is too light really but I'm happy enough with them. I'll post pics again
