Hey there, I hope you're all having a nice day. Alongside my many 28mm miniatures, I am starting to get into 15mm miniatures too. However, I have seen that almost all basing on 15mm has the same bases for many soldiers, for example 4 infantry being on the same big base. However, unfortunately this really bugs me a lot, I don't know why, so I want to base all my soldiers individually on smaller bases, and I have the resources to do it, but I think it would be a pain and an annoyance having to move so many miniatures one by one just for the unit to move somewhere. I was also thinking of putting 2 infantry soldiers on one base, but no more than that. Has anyone tried individual bases? All advice is appreciated, thank you. |

All my 15mm Colonials are individually based on round 15mm bases primarily for TSATF. Warbases made me some movement trays that holds 4 figures in 2 ranks of 2 for regulars with a frontage of just over 30mm and irregularly shaped bases that hold 8-10 natives. However, I wouldn't recommend individual basing for anything other than skirmish games unless you are going to use movement trays of some sort. |

I remember occasionally using individually-based 15mm figures back in the day, for rules like George Gush's Renaissance rules and early WRG ancient editions. They were an absolute pain to move and line up, and single-based close-order infantry in particular kept falling over. The bigger the armies you use, I would imagine, the more irritating this will prove to be. "Four to a base" is the WRG standard for closely-formed infantry, that started with their ancient rules and in the Renaissance period is used for DBR: all bases are of the same frontage, 40mm for 15mm figures, and different troop types have different numbers per base. In period this convention has been followed by the popular FOG(R): I don't know if any other rules for the period use it. In the ancient period, some popular recent rulesets use even larger diorama-style bases, but whether this has caught on after 1500 AD I do not know. Are you constrained at all by what rules you plan to use? |

The trouble with small bases is the time it takes to get them out the box, to move them around and put them back. This involves a lot of handling and results in wear and damage. I noticed that Impetus baroque has introduced an 18cm wide base- looks very effective. I'm just moving into this period myself (well the ECW, anyhow). I'm going to base most of my foot in 12s (4 files, 3 ranks). 12 such stands will fit in a Really Useful Box. Three stands and an extra command stand of 6 to the battalia. Horse will be in 6s. Just about to get the bases cut… |

RIght, thanks for the advice everyone, I've made a quick decision to put 2 onto a base, and 3 for bigger/elite units so that I can get the best of both worlds. Rules aren't a problem either. Thank you everyone. |
