What was your most expensive miniature-wargaming project? A new army, terrain set, game room, trip to Salute…

Bunkermeister Supporting Member of TMP15 May 2017 10:22 p.m. PST

I spent $1,000 USD on a Dora railway gun in HO scale.

My garage is converted into a wargame room; TV, 7 X 16 foot table, carpet, and etc, that was expensive over time.

My Berlin project includes Reich Chancellery, Brandenburg Gate, Victory Column, Reichstag, Fuhrerbunker, and many other pieces; they have cost thousands of dollars over time.

This is my only hobby, so what others may spend on beer, golf, fishing, football, I spend on army men. I have used the same scales, 60mm, GI Joe, HO/OO/1-72 since the early 1960's, buy a little bit nearly every week.

My own 28mm AWI figure line. Kings Mountain Miniatures.

Cost?

I don't want to think about it!

GarrisonMiniatures15 May 2017 11:14 p.m. PST

Garrison Miniatures, though to be fair it did pretty much pay for itself.

Uh, let me see. I paid full retail price Squadron Strike. Does that count?

I also paid full retail for Striker (in about 1983) and StarGrunt II (in about 2000).

Probably something from Games workshop I got a little bit obsessive about completing my 1st edition 40k and 3rd edition WFB book/game collections a few years back I'm not ever going to tell the wife how much I spent getting hold of a copy of the Realms of Chaos the Lost and the Damned book.

My most current project.

Probably my Alexander the Great project. All the Macedonians and Greeks are Foundry figures. The Persians are a mix of a bunch of stuff, but there are more than 1000 figures all told. In terms of opportunity cost for painting them, the cost of the figures, bases, pikes and movement trays.

It is insured.

Napoleonic 28mm project. I have armies of all of the major powers kickstarted by purchasing some painted figures.

I think adjusting for inflation, it would have to be my first--30mm Napoleonics. Mind you the expense has been spread out over decades.

My Team Yankee/FoW collection thus far.

Deciding to collect miniatures.

Most of my projects overlap, so "these figures and this terrain" will also support "that other game over there". I end up with a distributed total operational cost model.

So probably the most expensive would be the Mexican Army for the Battle of Puebla. Everybody and everything else does double (triple, etc.) duty somewhere else.

Its all one big project isn't it, so where to begin?

MacSparty16 May 2017 5:52 p.m. PST

Of all the hobbies? Restoring my '65 Mustang. Thousands later and, well, the engine starts.
