…Lawmaker Visit. "Turkey has refused to allow a delegation of German lawmakers to visit Bundeswehr soldiers at the Incirlik air base. The incident puts a further strain on already fraught ties between the two countries. Turkish authorities have once again refused to allow a group of German politicians to visit Bundeswehr soldiers stationed at Incirlik air base, German news agency dpa reported on Monday. Germany currently has several Tornado surveillance aircraft and a refueling plane deployed at the base that are assisting an international coalition carrying out aerial attacks on positions of the so-called "Islamic State" terrorist group in Iraq and Syria. Some 260 German military personnel are stationed at Incirlik. According to dpa information, one reason given for the denial of access was Germany's granting asylum to a number of Turkish officers who faced persecution following the failed coup in Turkey on July 15 last year…" Main page link Amicalement Armand |

Like I said, the rise of the New Ottoman Empire. Just another little tyrant on the rise. Soon the world will be like 1936 all over again. Just wondering who the British politician will be that says "Peace in our Time"? |

Turkey will prove to be a major military thorn in the side of NATO within twenty years, mark my words. |

NATO may find Turkey to be a liability or even an antagonist on many issues. Has a NATO member ever been asked to leave? |

Given that the Turks attacked the Greeks without being asked to leave, I think it will take a LOT to push the Turks out of NATO. Sadly. |

Just wondering who the British politician will be that says "Peace in our Time"? Fairly obvious, I would have thought. Luckily, he will never get into 10 Downing Street. |

Oh, right -- Cyprus, 1974! I'd overlooked that. Turkey got away with that because the Greek colonels had no friends and little sympathy at the time for a situation they were felt to have engineered, provoking a Turkish over-response (or excuse to do something they had wanted to do anyway but hadn't dared before). I expect Turkey's only in NATO anyway as a way to surround the USSR/Russia and control the Dardanelles. Plus it's been a handy base to project power into the Near East. |

Turkey has always been a wannabe European country and NATO has been a way of achieving that. At the moment it seems to be veering away from that ambition. |

Or they feel confident enough that they think they can have it both ways, by forcing Europe to "accept" them, even as they continue to grow and gain more power. The next big test will be when Erdogan annexes most of Syria. Europe will probably look the other way, but you never know. Dan |
