OK, we've done the Jerry Pournelle book poll. Time now for his evil twin. What's your favorite Larry Niven book?

Me? Oath of Fealty, Lucifer's Hammer, Ringworld, Flight of the Horse and Inferno.

KSmyth14 May 2017 8:19 a.m. PST

I confess, I've only read Ringworld many years ago. But I really enjoyed it.

Wow, he's written a lot more than I thought he did: link

I liked the "Integral Trees", unique setting and problems for the characters to deal with.

Ringworld will always be my favorite, even if it was not his best.

Winston Smith14 May 2017 8:55 a.m. PST

"What Good is a Glass Dagger", and the whole Magic Goes Away series.
Best line. "A dagger always works."

It's a refreshing change from the "Fill it up at the Pump" concept of Magic. Magic as a non renewable resource is a cool hook for fantasy.

I've only read Ringworld once many years ago. But I really disliked it and don't get me started on the sequels.

I liked Gil the Arm and the early Beowulf Shaeffer stories

Almost all the short stories are Great His early stuff is just priceless

+1 to cosmicbank--I just recently read the Draco's Tavern stories. The strength of the short story for hard SF is that the author can take one idea,or problem, and solve it (or not solve it) in a few pages--a good way to address a single idea, without getting tangled up with several others, and having the necessity of doing all the other things required by the novel form.

Maybe someone can remind me of the title of one I read many years ago. It had an image that has stuck--a man plunging back and forth through the center of a planet that had been pierced by a small black hole. Anyone know this one?

His later Beowulf Schaefer expansions are good.

Read "Lucifer's Hammer".
