…Ivory Coast.

"Mutinous soldiers in Ivory Coast shot three people on Saturday and cut off access to the second largest city, Bouake, as a revolt escalated over demands for bonus payments.

The revolt began in Bouake early on Friday before spreading quickly, following a similar pattern to a mutiny by the same group in January that paralyzed parts of Ivory Coast and marred its image as a post-war success story.

Mutineers seized control of the national military headquarters and defense ministry in the center of the commercial capital Abidjan on Friday…"

Third time's a charm? The poor soldiers are getting paid begger's wages so there will be more of this until Côte d'Ivoire either down-sizes its military or finances the military well enough to pay the troops a living wage. Since they are not permitted unions, these displays or military coups are all they can do to change things. Paying them better would also reduce corruption and shake-downs as soldiers try to make ends meet by extorting money from the run of the mill citizens. It's a right mess.

Better pay could allow the troops to concentrate on soldiering rather than tax-farming everyone which they encounter for bribes and protection money.

Cheers.

All these African " armies" have way too many officers, cheating, corrupt systems. The privates are like gangs for hire. To guard you house you can hire up a platoon. Helps discouraging looting.
The top layer of corruption changes, the ways don't.

Is it just me or is it unwise to pissoff people armed with military hardware. I mean if you underpay toilet cleaners at worst you have to clean your own toilet.
But underpaying people armed with aks and RPGs is stupid

probably it was'nt sufficient for the disastrous French African policy to chase away the independent brilliant former President supported by people to put on power a Nato/French puppet and yes man ..that, among other things, does'nt respect not only human rights but his own people necessities……hope the mess will continue and African people will again have the possibility to elect their leader
