Do you (or anyone you know who is a miniature wargamer) play a musical instrument? If so, what instrument(s) do you play?

Hafen von Schlockenberg09 May 2017 8:55 a.m. PST

I've been into sax since age 12.

And I have a wargamer friend who is a big pianist.

No and no.

WarWizard09 May 2017 9:01 a.m. PST

I really wanted to learn how to play the sax when I was a kid. I always got A's in music class. But my school never had funds for a band or musical instruments. So when I retire I told myself I will finally get to take my sax lessons.

belasirius09 May 2017 9:02 a.m. PST

Bagpipes

Yes and No

My family is very musical; my mother learned to play the banjo and the balalaika by ear and No. 2 son is a bagpiper (which means I have a broad definition for music)

I however am graced with my father's tin ear

badwargamer09 May 2017 9:10 a.m. PST

Once at band camp…..

RittervonBek09 May 2017 9:14 a.m. PST

I play piano and guitar.

Patrick Sexton Supporting Member of TMP09 May 2017 9:18 a.m. PST

Negative on both.

rmaker09 May 2017 9:23 a.m. PST

Yes. Not well, but ukulele and occasionally recorder and tin whistle.

And, of course, Duke Seifried is a professional musician.

And Lou Zocchi plays musical saw.

Winston Smith09 May 2017 9:27 a.m. PST

No but I can sing very badly and loud.

NOLA Chris09 May 2017 9:30 a.m. PST

If the stereo counts as a musical instrument…
:)

Thomas O09 May 2017 9:35 a.m. PST

I can play a guitar, not very good anymore but I can.

In increasing order of how far away from me you want to stand while I play – guitar, sax (tenor preferred), bass guitar, tuba, flute, baritone horn, bass voice, viola, mandolin, clarinet, trumpet, melodic sledgehammer on scrapmetal (in a metal band), baritone voice, trombone, sousaphone, bugle, Tibetan throat singing voice, piano, and evil (which is SWMBO's name for this thing I can do where I sing but let the congestion in my throat split my vocal chords into two separate sets (like a finger on a fret) and I get two dissonant falsetto notes).

SWMBO, SOM, and DOM all play piano and (respectively) violin, violin, and cello+bass. DOM also plays some bass guitar.

Also, all four of us were for a while half of a handbell choir and all of a special-purpose handbell quartet. SOM actually got an award at graduation for "best music student" at his college for handbells (and singing in musicals) and he was a forensic science major. The Dean had to check the rules to see if the award had to go to someone in the Music department. Apparently not.

Besides, music is all math. So is wargaming. They're practically the same thing.

Patrick R09 May 2017 10:24 a.m. PST

I sometimes play the fool.

Weasel09 May 2017 10:29 a.m. PST

Not personally but three of my gaming mates have been guitar players, two metal and one old school rock.

dagc5409 May 2017 10:58 a.m. PST

I play the trumpet

surdu200509 May 2017 11:11 a.m. PST

I can play the iPod.

chasseur09 May 2017 11:14 a.m. PST

Jamesonsafari09 May 2017 11:32 a.m. PST

I do not but I have never asked my game buddies.

Just Jack Supporting Member of TMP09 May 2017 12:25 p.m. PST

I had to give up guitar once wargaming took over my life, not time for both!

V/R,
Jack

I used to play bass in various garage rock bands when I was younger. Taught myself how to play the guitar, then switched to bass when I had an opportunity to be in a band…

KSmyth09 May 2017 12:59 p.m. PST

I love music and have a large collection of vinyl. 20 years ago when my son was learning (he's a working musician) I bought a guitar. But it came down to learning to play or miniature wargaming. I gave the guitar to Pat. He still has it.

mumbasa09 May 2017 12:59 p.m. PST

banjo and bodhran (Irish hand-held drum)

IanKHemm09 May 2017 4:12 p.m. PST

I don't play much now but for years I've played rock bands, jazz ensembles, folk bands, orchestras, big bands, choirs, busking, etc… Mainly bass (electric and double bass) but also guitar, flute, mandolin, tin whistle and bodhran.

Grignotage09 May 2017 4:16 p.m. PST

I enjoy listening to music but am otherwise profoundly un-musical.

Cmde Perry09 May 2017 4:51 p.m. PST

I sing bass, and play tuba. If at the same time, it sounds a bit bizarre.

I'd like to learn bagpipes but I don't read treble clef. :)

There are some other musicians in the group, but I'll let them speak for themselves.

Dave Jackson Supporting Member of TMP09 May 2017 5:02 p.m. PST

Yes, classical guitar….though sometimes I play the fool…..seriously tho, classical guitar, for some 45 yrs now

Oberlindes Sol LIC Supporting Member of TMP09 May 2017 5:43 p.m. PST

I can usually get the CD player to make the sounds I want. That's good enough for me.

Kevin C09 May 2017 7:37 p.m. PST

I used to play the baritone (euphonium), but I have not played one in 31 years. However, I plan on taking it up again when my children get old enough to play along.

Sundance09 May 2017 8:17 p.m. PST

I play with instruments more than I play them, but I play a little guitar and violin.

willthepiper09 May 2017 8:21 p.m. PST

Yes. Which instrument? There's a clue in my username.

Norman D Landings09 May 2017 11:36 p.m. PST

Learned trumpet at school – loved it at the time but never took it further and haven't played in years.

Keyboards – played in various club bands. Nothing fancy: played chords and 'filled in' on horn breaks and such.

And a friend of mine gave me a guitar, which I occasionally make a half-arsed effort to learn.

Dexter Ward10 May 2017 2:24 a.m. PST

Yes – guitar and piano
A wargame friend plays guitar, bass and drums.
And another one plays flamenco stuff

Old Wolfman10 May 2017 6:41 a.m. PST

Harmonica,a few chords of guitar,violin,bugle.

alien BLOODY HELL surfer10 May 2017 6:59 a.m. PST

A wargamer once offered to teach me how to play the pink flute.

Ceterman10 May 2017 7:19 a.m. PST

The Drums… when I can, I no longer have a kit but a friend or 2 do, so I still get to rock every now & again!

I sing and play guitar well enough to accompany a group of musicians in church once a month. My wargame club has a very talented guitarist who also writes music and records albums.

Mooseworks814 May 2017 5:51 p.m. PST

In Junior High I played the trumpet, baritone and then tuba in that order. Haven't played any since.

Balin Shortstuff20 Jul 2017 7:08 p.m. PST
