But I have to say I wasn't aware that there were so many mines laid in the Falklands and that they're still there. At the time did these impact the British approach to retaking the islands at all and did they cause significant casualties?

The other thing that surprised me is that the article says the British government is paying for the removal of the mines to comply with their obligations under the 1997 Ottawa Mine Ban Treaty. Is Argentina a signatory to this Treaty, and if so, shouldn't they be paying for it? I have to say I don't know a great deal about this treaty, but surely an invader should pay for removal of any mines they lay in enemy territory!

The treaty says 'in territory you control' I don't think London would like any suggestion that Argentina had any form of control over the Falkland Isles.
