As one of the posters on the linked thread commented, why would Mexico become one state? |

Yep, I think GurKhan is right, if something like this happened they probably have created new US states out of the existing Mexican states rather than admitted Mexico as one big state. That actually would probably work out in the Mexican's long term favor anyway (more senators, and with the way congressmen get doled out I think more members of the house as well). So you'd have the US states Nuevo Leon and Sonora and so forth. There were 20 states in Mexico at the time of the Mexican-American War, though others were added later. -Will |

It will never happen now and it was probably a bad idea at the time. However, should Quebec ever leave Canada, I could see the possibility of other Canadian provinces move to become part of the U.S. However, even this Canadian scenario would not go over very well with segments of the U.S. population. Since most Canadians, politically speaking, have more in common with people in U.S. states that border their provinces than they do with Americans further to the south, there would probably be opposition to extending statehood to Canadian provinces in the American South. There would be other problems associated with this Canadian scenario as well, but it is not out of the realm of possibilities. That said, this is a topic more appropriate for the Blue Fez. That is all that I have to say on the matter here. If you wish to continue the discussion, I would suggest moving it to the Blue Fez. Martin or others may have more insight concerning this matter. As for Mexico now becoming part of the U.S. that is out of the question. It would be a nightmare for the peoples of both countries. |

If Puerto Rico can't become a state, there's no hope for any part of Mexico (although I rather doubt they really want to become part of the U.S.). |

Texas would no longer be the top banana republic within the USA…. and no way the Maritime Provinces would give up their healthcare or pension systems for American laissez-faire. |

Mexico has 31 states. Assuming something happened that would make a significant part of the Mexican population want to join the USA (without moving, that is) and Mexico applied for statehood, there are three possibilities. 1) Admit Mexico as a state. Not really feasible, as with 127 million people they would have an enormously outsized population for a state. Among other issues, this would give them only 2 senators- a fraction of the per capita representation of other states, a serious handicap. Sheer size would make them the default swing state in any election. 2) Admit Mexican states on a state by state basis. As Mexican states have an average of 4.1 million people compared to 6.4 million for the US as a whole, much more feasible. States would be on a much more equal footing. 3) Consolidate a few Mexican states to reach the same average per state population. A little trickier, but might make more sense. Trivia- only 1 nation has every formally applied to be a US State, and been rejected: The Dominican Republic, which to this day produces more major league baseball players per capita than any state in the United States. If we rejected them, (Dominicans are probably the most pro-American people in the world) there is no way we'd take in Mexico. Ridiculous. |
