"Cinco de Mayo is probably the holiday most often celebrated that no one understands. What's it all about? How is it celebrated? What does it mean to Mexicans? Here are the answers in a handy guide… Main page link Amicalement Armand

Yup…victory over the French. |

And just a symbolic little skirmish at that. :) YouTube link Dan PS. I thought Mexican Independence was when tens of thousands of rebel Mesoamericans joined forces with a small band of Spanish adventurers to overthrow their damned Aztec overlords! |

Sink the mayo? Must be some kind of fishing/drinking/cooking game… |

Strange. Why do Americans celebrate other countries stuff? I mean, we don't celebrate Bastille Day and I'm pretty sure the French don't celebrate Trafalgar Day! |
Cacique Caribe | 05 May 2017 2:27 p.m. PST |
Why? Because we always fall for clever gimmicks designed to boost sales or to increase happy hour bar traffic. And we are now so afraid to question those things because we're afraid to leave anyone out. :) Dan PS. What do the French call French fries over there? Or Belgian waffles in Belgium? |

Why do we celebrate the holidays of other countries? Because we're a nation of immigrants from those countries, and we've been celebrating them since our ancestors came over 300, 200, 100, 50, or 5 years ago! Also, like our ancestors, we like to drink: St. Patrick's Day: Irish whisky with a Guiness back, please Cinco de Mayo: Dos cervezas por favor! Bastille Day: This bottle's finished. Let's move on to the red wines. Oktoberfest: Gott sei dank that it starts in September. |

Oberlindes- Don't forget the gigantic holiday celebrated each year by millions of Americans who know hardly anything about the day's theme. 364 days a year they have no interest or understanding of the subject but on that one day a hive mentality takes over the entire country. The NFL refers to it as the Super Bowl. |

Cinco de Mayo is important to the entire Western Hemisphere (except Canada.) Because Mexico kicked out the last recolonization attempt by the European Monarchies. |
basileus66 | 05 May 2017 7:10 p.m. PST |
Because Mexico kicked out the last recolonization attempt by the European Monarchies. But not at Puebla. First, Mexico surrendered, and then Juarez, who nobody passed the memo he had been defeated, continued the war until France became wary of a US intervention in support of Juaristas, and retreated. |

No, not at Puebla. Puebla was a small victory, but had excellent propaganda value to the remaining Mexican forces. |
goragrad | 05 May 2017 8:47 p.m. PST |
Puebla was a bit more than a skirmish, although the butcher's bill was not high. Indeed Basileus, without the US affirming the Monroe Doctrine there would not have been a French withdrawal. They weren't exactly kicked out… |

Dan….they call French fries "frites" and "Belgian Waffles "Gaufres de (insert name of town here, as Brussels waffles are different than say, Liege waffles)" |
Rrobbyrobot | 06 May 2017 4:33 a.m. PST |
Liege waffles are probably well defended. But a pushover where anybody named Bertha is concerned… |

I celebrate all holidays indiscriminately. I celebrate other country's holidays, I celebrate extinct holidays (e.g., Quinquatrus), I celebrate famous and obscure saints' days, I celebrate made-up holidays honoring birthdays of fictional characters (Cormare, anyone?). The more merriment, the more I likes it. |

Yes, I know many in the US don't know about the "Battle" of Puebla. But we couldn't get into a Mexican eatery last night because of all the Cinco de Mayo "goings on" … So we ate at one of our favorite Italian place instead. We may try to get Mexican next Friday. Ole' !!!! And even other than Mexican places were serving Mexican food too yesterday. Like O'Charley's and Ruby Tuesday's … Another example of the phrase – "The USA is a melting pot." And I wouldn't have it any other way. |
