Does anyone know what colour dutch uniforms were for a battle such as Fontenoy? Coat colour? |

Coats were Dark blue. The cut of the coat was left to the discretion of the regimental commander, and could therefore be in either the English or French style. |

Stephen Manley had a booklet on this army's uniforms etc in his series on the Armies of the WAS. Its long out of print in UK and the only one for sale on Abebooks is for a ludicrous price. "On Military Matters" in NY has this one and some of his others for only $12 USD: link These are excellent publications. |

My English translation of 'Fontenoy: France Dominating Europe', by Denis Gandilhon, from the French 'Men and Battles' series, published by Histoire & Collections, has colour plates devoted to all the combatant armies. Only blue coated Dutch regiments are depicted, but the Swiss Sturlerst Regiment plate includes a note that says that this unit was unusual because most Swiss regiments in Dutch service wore red coats. Many years ago there was an article by Dan Schorr on the Dutch army of the WAS in The Courier that included facing colours for many units. Would you like me to try and locate it? |

I would not depend on the plates in the Fontenoy book. |

I wrote the article on Fontenoy including a section on the Dutch uniforms in the Courier. I strongly advise buying the Manley booklets. It is as good as you will find. I spent quite a bit of research time with the Dutch Army Museum in Delft. There is a surprising lack of information regarding Dutch uniforms for this war. |

Eureka makes an excellent range of Dutch figures in 28mm. |

I agree with Ken (Tricorne1971). The Manley books are defnintely the way to go. |

By Fontenoy the only Dutch regiments not in blue were Foreign mercenaries, Scots and cavalry. |

I have the Manley book and the Eureka figures. Both are very good. Ideally the Manley book would have colour plates detailing every unit, but it is a product of its time, so it's line illustrations of the various coat types and then notes of which uniforms apply to which regiments. It's also damned cheap. It only cost me £9.00 GBP 3 years ago. The Eureka figures are lovely. There are two types, with and without lapels. But all are advancing. These options give you enough units for an army. But it won't cover everything. I don't think they work for the Scottish regiments if I remember correctly. I particularly like the option for the cavalry horses with docked tails or not. Nice figures and I found them a joy to paint…. Flags are available from Vaubner Designs (?) for the infantry. No fancy shading, but still very nice. However, cavalry standards seem to be unavailable, so it would be up to you to almost design your own. As I understand it, the Royal Fig site DAF links to are the Manley illustrations coloured in. |

Bindon Blood sums it up well. |

The Scots Brigade in Dutch service wore essentially British style uniforms, with crimson officer's sashes, not orange. Their flags are less easy to pin down. The facing colours in the WAS were mostly yellow, one Batt'n having white for a year. |
