I've had experience with several of the 6mm infantry figures described here and on the link (Bob McKenzie's Test of Battle page). I agree with most of what's been said.
- GHQ Individual Infantry and Support Weapons: Best detailing, best casting, by a wide margin. Some folks criticize the poses as somewhat "stiff" in appearance. I'm not so concerned on that. But I do agree with comments about the choice of poses and the compilation of the packs. It is challenging to assemble the right number of infantry and the appropriate support weapons to make platoons/companies/battalions. Some criticize the figures as too large / out of scale. I see that as marginal -- as the link to comparisons shows many of the figures are closer to a good 6mm size than other vendors. BUT note that there are a few packs that do indeed appear to be out-sized -- in particular the Vietnam infantry and the WW2 US Paratroopers appear closer to 10mm than 6mm -- they are notably larger than the other GHQ figures.
Note: not all GHQ figures are "Individual Infantry" and "Individual Support Weapons". Their other infantry, much older in design, is blocks of figures or support weapons/crews casted together. These pieces are not to my tastes at all.
- CinC: Good size. Good proportions. Good crisp castings. Odd stiff-looking poses. Not enough support weapons to make useful platoons/companies/battalions. But terribly fragile! I have had many. They break off at the ankles. I will not be buying more, and am in the process of replacing those I have.
- Adler: Very interesting variety, lots of good poses, easy to assemble the right mix. I don't use them for my infantry formations. Have gamed with other people's Adler infantry on many occasions, though. But the big-head thing is just not my cup of soup. I use some Adler stuff selectively when there are no good alternatives -- for example the Adler Russian tankriders have no equal.
- Scotia: Some of their figures are very large -- almost 10mm. Also there is some substantial variety in the quality of their models -- some of the infantry is OK, some is of such odd quality that it is hard to guess what the figure is supposed to be. Given little photography available on the website, it's kind of a hit-and-miss process buying Scotia infantry. They do make some useful figures -- for example they include radiomen, which are hard to find from anyone else. But other figures are just inexplicable … for example their WW2 French include water-cooled MGs in the support weapons. Hello?!? French? Water-cooled MGs?
- H&R: I came to rely on the H&R line for my infantry in the 1990s. It was only after GHQ introduced their Individual Infantry that I was tempted away. But I still have, and still use, and still buy and paint up a fair bit of H&R stuff. The detailing is substantially less than GHQ. The figs are a bit smaller. But the poses are good, and the variety and pack configurations are just SOOOO useful!
I am currently in the process of painting up some H&R WW2 US Infantry to replace my old, badly battered and broken CinC WW2 US Infantry:
The figures are not as detailed, and the castings are sometimes a bit sloppy (some figures with missing body parts, etc.). But they are good enough when painted up,they are pretty robust, and it's hard to beat the variety.
Don't know where else I can build a proper US Infantry TOE with the right mix of rifleman to BAR gunners, with M1919 LMGs, M1917 .30cal HMGs, M2 .50cal HMGs on tripod or AA mounts, bazookas, 60mm mortars, 81mm mortars, engineers with flame throwers and mine detectors … it's a good combination of all that you need to put it together.
For comparison, here are some GHQ Romanian Individual Infantry figures:
The quality of the GHQ figures just can't be beat!
Contrary to many other folks, I am fairly open to mixing vendors of figures and models as appropriate to construct the units I want to make. Here for example are some Romanian mid/late war AT guns. The guns are CinC Pak 38/97s, the crews are H&R kneeling Russians, the support squad is GHQ Individual Romanian figures, and the prime movers are GHQ (German SdKfz 6s and French Lafflies).
Hope that helps.
