I'm looking for some 6mm infantry for a Conflict of Heroes solo game.

I REALLY like the look of the Tides of Iron figures but they are bigger than 6mm. Does anyone know if something like these can be had without buying the game?

Which manufacturer makes the better detailed infantry in 6mm scale?

Thanks

GHQ are the best, but expensive.

Baccus are very nice, but a little big compared to most AFVs on the market.

I have some Mainforce stuff, modern and WW2, its a little big too, but most of the figs are prone.

H&R are ok, a little on the small size.

C-in-C are pretty limited for poses, and brittle, prone to breakage.

Only my opinion of course.

Adler is another option – detail is good but some folks don't like exaggerated details and their large heads. But for me these are 6mm tiny dudes and looking down on them from a few feet away the large helmets make the differences between sides visually quite distinctive.

The new figures that Heroics & Ros are producing are quite nice, Adler are also very good. With some of the new Heroics & Ros you can just buy a single strip that way you can check out what they are like without buying a full pack. I find some GHQ figures look a bit stiff, and there is a mass of metal under the barrels of MG's and laying down figures.
The new Heroics & Ros figures are newer than the ones shown in DColtman's link.

I've had experience with several of the 6mm infantry figures described here and on the link (Bob McKenzie's Test of Battle page). I agree with most of what's been said.

- GHQ Individual Infantry and Support Weapons: Best detailing, best casting, by a wide margin. Some folks criticize the poses as somewhat "stiff" in appearance. I'm not so concerned on that. But I do agree with comments about the choice of poses and the compilation of the packs. It is challenging to assemble the right number of infantry and the appropriate support weapons to make platoons/companies/battalions. Some criticize the figures as too large / out of scale. I see that as marginal -- as the link to comparisons shows many of the figures are closer to a good 6mm size than other vendors. BUT note that there are a few packs that do indeed appear to be out-sized -- in particular the Vietnam infantry and the WW2 US Paratroopers appear closer to 10mm than 6mm -- they are notably larger than the other GHQ figures.

Note: not all GHQ figures are "Individual Infantry" and "Individual Support Weapons". Their other infantry, much older in design, is blocks of figures or support weapons/crews casted together. These pieces are not to my tastes at all.

- CinC: Good size. Good proportions. Good crisp castings. Odd stiff-looking poses. Not enough support weapons to make useful platoons/companies/battalions. But terribly fragile! I have had many. They break off at the ankles. I will not be buying more, and am in the process of replacing those I have.

- Adler: Very interesting variety, lots of good poses, easy to assemble the right mix. I don't use them for my infantry formations. Have gamed with other people's Adler infantry on many occasions, though. But the big-head thing is just not my cup of soup. I use some Adler stuff selectively when there are no good alternatives -- for example the Adler Russian tankriders have no equal.

- Scotia: Some of their figures are very large -- almost 10mm. Also there is some substantial variety in the quality of their models -- some of the infantry is OK, some is of such odd quality that it is hard to guess what the figure is supposed to be. Given little photography available on the website, it's kind of a hit-and-miss process buying Scotia infantry. They do make some useful figures -- for example they include radiomen, which are hard to find from anyone else. But other figures are just inexplicable … for example their WW2 French include water-cooled MGs in the support weapons. Hello?!? French? Water-cooled MGs?

- H&R: I came to rely on the H&R line for my infantry in the 1990s. It was only after GHQ introduced their Individual Infantry that I was tempted away. But I still have, and still use, and still buy and paint up a fair bit of H&R stuff. The detailing is substantially less than GHQ. The figs are a bit smaller. But the poses are good, and the variety and pack configurations are just SOOOO useful!

I am currently in the process of painting up some H&R WW2 US Infantry to replace my old, badly battered and broken CinC WW2 US Infantry:

The figures are not as detailed, and the castings are sometimes a bit sloppy (some figures with missing body parts, etc.). But they are good enough when painted up,they are pretty robust, and it's hard to beat the variety.

Don't know where else I can build a proper US Infantry TOE with the right mix of rifleman to BAR gunners, with M1919 LMGs, M1917 .30cal HMGs, M2 .50cal HMGs on tripod or AA mounts, bazookas, 60mm mortars, 81mm mortars, engineers with flame throwers and mine detectors … it's a good combination of all that you need to put it together.

For comparison, here are some GHQ Romanian Individual Infantry figures:

The quality of the GHQ figures just can't be beat!

Contrary to many other folks, I am fairly open to mixing vendors of figures and models as appropriate to construct the units I want to make. Here for example are some Romanian mid/late war AT guns. The guns are CinC Pak 38/97s, the crews are H&R kneeling Russians, the support squad is GHQ Individual Romanian figures, and the prime movers are GHQ (German SdKfz 6s and French Lafflies).

Hope that helps.

I found some pictures of the new modern British and Russian troops on the following link. Just scroll past the armoured vehicles.

I would agree with what's already been said – the new H&R are much better than their older stuff, the equal of GHQ now and available in smaller batches (down to a single strip). But that new stuff so far is 1980s, the WW2 is older, and as mentioned above, rather slight and poorly detailed.
I would also put in a word for the new Baccus range. These are new in the last year, and expanding their ranges – they began with basic UK, German and US troops, and the latest are British Paras and German Falschirmjager. I like these troops a lot. The pack sizes are larger than H&R, but you can buy (say) a dozen MMGs in a pack, or a dozen mortars. With GHQ you might wind up buying 50 troops to get a couple of the support weapons you wanted.

John, the H&R figures are slowly coming out for WWII winter Germans, Russians and Finn's are already out and British Paratroops are due out in June. Also they have produced some new WWI figures.
