What's this flag on the Confederate side during Spotsylvania reenactment? Red bars with white in middle?

This same flag was discussed on TMP a couple of years ago. the consensus then it was a non-historical, probably homemade flag.

A Canadian flag with the Maple Leaf shot off? :)

Interestingly, I am the one who started the discussion a few years ago after seeing the flag at Cedar Creek. It is a non-historic flag from some guys in West Virginia as I recall.

I thought we were fighting Peruvians when I first saw the flag.

Why was it allowed at a reenactment?

Depends on the organizers of the reenactment. The unit I was with (some 30 years ago) would never allow a non-historical flag on the field while others we dealt with wouldn't have any problem with it (one these groups also allowed modern blue jeans in the ranks!). It all depends.

Looks like a variant of the CSA's 1st National Flag to me. My former reenactment unit had one and a Hardee's Corps flag.

No variation of the first national I ever saw had vertical red stripes like that. I'm going with Peru and yahoos who either think it is funny or has no clue it isn't a civil war flag. The other possibility is that it is actually a modern signal flag, number 7. Although the proportions seem wrong for that. Another very possible answer I hate to say is that it is a variant of the Klu Klux Klan flag of David Duke that they snuck in. Usually, Duke's group has a small cross on the white part. The Rebels have allot more re-enactors than the Yankees, but with the numbers they, sadly, also seem to get the bottom of the old cracker barrel in quality some times.

Its a Brigade HQ Flag 1861 Ordanance.

This flag could also supposed to be a captured Federal brigade designating flag from 1862. According to General Orders No. 102 (24 March 1862) a red/white/red flag was used to designate the headquarters of the third brigade of the first division of each corps. Several flags of this system do exist, although their usage did not seem to be widespread.

For a description of these flags see:
