Speaking to CTV News, a spokesperson for the National Center for Truth and Reconciliation, Ry Moran, said that the word "assimilate" is indeed too offensive to be displayed on the plate, regardless of intent. "Words like that, meant or not, have an actual impact on many people," said Moran National Center for Truth and Reconciliation? You gotta be kidding……. |

link If you don't know about something, let's not start ridiculing it. The "Truth & Reconciliation commission was set up to study the issues surrounding the Aboriginal residential schools system which was set up in the late 1800s with the express purpose of dislocating Aboriginal parents from their children and eliminating their influence on their education. Many children suffered horrible privation, and physical and sexual abuse with many thousands dying during their time at the schools. "Assimilation" is a word that is extremely offensive to the aboriginal community in Canada because of the connotations. Having said that, context is everything and the Province is bowing to this pressure, which I don't agrfee with. |

It's the "Heckler's Veto". "If only one person is offended, that is too many." |
nazrat | 30 Apr 2017 4:43 p.m. PST |
And you are actually accusing Canada of being an oppressive regime because of this one thing?! CANADA?!!! |
Winston Smith | 30 Apr 2017 5:07 p.m. PST |
Having said what I said, I have to agree with nazrat. This may be bureaucratic silliness, but is hardly "oppressive". Orwell was right about the cheapening of the language. |
Streitax | 30 Apr 2017 11:04 p.m. PST |
Well, nazrat, if one person finds Canada oppressive, then Canada has to change. |

I think Canada* would be much happier if it left the US, as long as it took California, Michigan, Illinois and a couple other states with it. :) Dan * Most of Canada is south of their border anyway. :) |

No, Streitax – you have to find it oppressive for one of the approved reasons. |
