I'm looking into one of these and see so many mods out there for AHQ which seem pretty complex, and I figure if the original game was so broken, why bother and just get WHQ, but then I read that WHQ is a bit gamey and has issues with other things. Heroquest seems the most simple and beautiful but probably too simple for me in spite of the ability to add quests and characters from various mods. It seems that AHQ fits the bill of that oldhammer feel and has the most basic potential as far as the engine but it needs the ability to get more characters and fix some issues with combat as well as add some roelplaying elements, which our group would have no problem doing just with basic Warhammer FRP if it were added in between adventures. Any advise appreciated.

AHQ didn't need much done to it.

My group played it for years and years.

It all depends on having a good scenario and a GM who doesn't have to kill everyone at all costs.

I used to waste hours aged about fourteen playing Advanced Heroquest solo rules, /sad git/. Brilliant game. Happily I still own it so I don't have to rue selling it. Heroquest was a good game too, never played Quest (but often thought I'd like to).

GM who doesn't have to kill everyone

What we can't kill everyone?

Where is the fun in letting some of them live?

They knew the risks when they entered.

There are a ton of dungeoncrawlers, some that let you use your own miniatures, others that come with them. Go onto BoardGameGeek and search on the Recommendations board about dungeoncrawlers. If you're into Eurogames, see if you can late-back the Gloomhaven boardgame. Warhammer Quest has a new edition which is very different from the old. You can find free downloads of fanmade Advanced HeroQuest rules. The answer you want really depends on what you're looking for in a game, as well as what components you already have.
