Very nice review, Col. Bill.

DOS--those were the days.

There are plenty of Carnage and Glory games on the schedule for Historicon in July. For details, please go to the H'con Preliminary Events List.

Hope to see you there.

Since the esteemed Reviewer specialises in these things …

Can C&G be tweaked for Grand-Tac engagements, i.e. with Brigades whacking one another rather than Bns or Cav Regts?

And can you recalibrate the ground scale accordingly?

For some time after it's initial release there was a Grand-Tactical Version of C&G. However, with the popularity of other rule systems like Napoleon's Battles and the upgrade of the Tactical System to C&G II, Nigel dropped the Grand-Tactical System from the library. I suppose if you want one bad enough you might contact Nigel as to availability of the Grand Tactical Version.

The ground scale can be adjusted to one of three settings: 1" = 25 paces, 1" = 50 paces, or 3" = 100 paces.

As stated in the Review, it's all about tactics! You have to plan when to commit your Reserves to either save the day, or punch the hole that will break your enemy. Every action your troops take builds their Fatigue level, and tired troops don't win battles! So you have to plan ahead what to do, when to do it, and who best to do it with! It's not a game about who has the hottest hand with the dice! It's a game of strategy, tactics, combined arms and your generalship.

I have the 18th century one laying around. Very good game, have he considered maling a tablet/phone version. A tablet would be perfect to use. So you don't have to shlep around a laptop.

I believe C&GII will run on a Surface Pro tablet.

@ Lareenue

In addition to what vagamer63 mentions of ground scale…I believe the answer would be yes even though the core of the programming is tactical.
One of the "CnG regular players" of the author has set-up/ created tricks in using the programming so all his play now is units of large regiments or small brigades and he only GM's larger grand-tactic actions, which he enjoys most.

I cannot give you details as I do not know them… as to how it is done [ yes…. I need to re-locate my notes from him as to how :-)].
My advise is to; invest in the rules ( very reasonable priced), become familiar with them, and then contact me ( if he doesn't already jump in here in this post) for his contact info [to get better direction faster how it is done ( and to remove the units acting like a battalion and more like a regiment/brigade needed for the more grand tactical play)]

Nice article COL Bill! And timely too. I'm getting ready to run a Napoleonic C&GII game next weekend, Saturday May 6th, at the Heart of America HMGS con Border Wars in the KC area.

The game will easily run on a Surface 3 (Non-Pro type), and really, that's about tablet size.

For the record, nearly all good rules emphasize those attributes mentioned by vagamer63. However, being computer moderated C&G is able to push the issue somewhat harder be keeping the numbers hidden from the players so they can't calculate everything themselves. There are other methods to achieve this, but it is one of the major strengths of the game.

Ciao, Colonel Bill
