nvdoyle | 25 Apr 2017 5:28 p.m. PST |
Oh, I want one in 1/35 for a 40k superheavy, but yes, a maintenance nivhtmare.. Imagine throwing an inner track… |
Wildman | 25 Apr 2017 7:09 p.m. PST |
Takom makes one in 1/35 scale. Squadron Mail Order has it on sale for $35 USD right now. |

Looks like a Maint. nightmare about to happen … Can you imagine doing suspension work on that thing? |
Legion 4 | 26 Apr 2017 7:59 a.m. PST |
It would probably take forever ! You'd have to take the whole suspension system a part ! But yes, it should be used for sci-fi like 40K ! LOL ! |
11th ACR | 26 Apr 2017 8:43 a.m. PST |
"Looks like a Maint. nightmare about to happen … Can you imagine doing suspension work on that thing?" But not as bad as this:
With outer tracks removed:

Yeah, the Obj279 is a crazy beast. That strange shape was to keep it from getting blown away by the blast wave from a nuke! |

Them crazy Russkies !!!! What a Hoot !!!! |
Vostok17 | 27 Apr 2017 12:52 p.m. PST |
As I said in a certain thread, this tank had a fantastic patency on rough terrain (he could calmly get through the swamps), but problems with turning (a very large turning radius). And it would be fun, if this "lunar rover" would be launched into a series – it would have turned out a comic concept about the "one-off tank" brought to its logical end. |
Legion 4 | 29 Apr 2017 8:49 a.m. PST |
With that "boat shaped" hull I'd think it would do well in swamps … |
ScottS | 29 Apr 2017 9:06 a.m. PST |
Someone (not me) made a great diorama of one in WWIII:
|
Vostok17 | 29 Apr 2017 2:29 p.m. PST |
Hello, Legion 4! The hull has nothing to do with this (although the idea is very interesting…). But 4 caterpillars – a nightmare for maintenance – gave here such an interesting effect. Hello, ScottS! link |
Charlie 12 | 29 Apr 2017 6:36 p.m. PST |
This POS is living proof that engineers HATE tankers… Like I said before, one look at that thing would have been enough to make me (a God fearing treadhead) transfer to the infantry… |
Legion 4 | 30 Apr 2017 8:38 a.m. PST |
Great dio Scott !!!! Hey that US Tanker is wearing a 2ID patch ! I was with 2ID '84-'85 ! gave here such an interesting effect. I'd think so … but it must have an added capability making it traverse swamps, etc., more effectively. But I wouldn't want to repair those tracks ! Were you a Russian Tanker ? one look at that thing would have been enough to make me (a God fearing treadhead) transfer to the infantry…
Heaven Forbid !!!! |

Hello, Legion 4! Yes, I was a tank driver. Not for long the truth, after the injury was demobilized. To change the trucks is a nasty and hard work (and here there are four of them …), but it is much more unpleasant to get stuck on a road that is formally considered "passable", and in practice it is easier to swim by boat on this "road". And there are a lot of such "roads" here. But just do it, engineers seem to have been guerrilla warfare for a long time against the tankmen. I associate this with the fact that engineers basically consider themselves pacifists. |
Legion 4 | 30 Apr 2017 1:19 p.m. PST |
Good to know another former soldier. Even if we were on different sides ! I'm glad to meet a former "adversary". But we were both just soldiers doing our jobs. It matters little now … I've had a few of my vehicles stuck in a variety of terrain too. I comes with the job ! But just do it, engineers seem to have been guerrilla warfare for a long time against the tankmen. I associate this with the fact that engineers basically consider themselves pacifists. LOL !! I very much agree ! |
Vostok17 | 30 Apr 2017 1:37 p.m. PST |
Hello, Legion 4! Well, I served in the 2000s, already after the fall of the Soviet Union. In any case, I am also glad to get acquainted. In general, in Russia, roads are one of the main problems. In winter, passing cars are regularly stuck in front of my house. Once even snowcapped UNIMOG was stuck. And country roads are something spectacular, especially in spring and autumn. Approximately the same as in the tank range, only worse. Engineers really consider themselves as pacifists (at least in Russia). I find this very strange, since they are the ones who are developing all these deadly things. |

130mm rifled gun on that beast… anyone have numbers for armor penetration? Also, I'd love to get some models in 15mm… hint, hint Geoff! |

Well, I served in the 2000s, already after the fall of the Soviet Union. In any case Usmank, I am also glad to get acquainted. I'm happy to have you to chat with on topics were are both interested. In general, in Russia, roads are one of the main problems. Yes, we saw in WWII, that worked to your advantage in some cases. I know in the US, some of the more rural, backwoods, outback, farming areas. Roads are roads in name only. Sometimes I had to go to places like that when I was working. I was not driving a Pick-up truck or SUV, so I was glad I didn't get stuck. Sometimes I had to leave my car at the bottom of a wet steep hill. And walk up to find what I was looking for. But in the Army, more than once we got some vehicles stuck. In mud, snow, sand, etc. … And sometimes they threw a track to add to the "fun" … I have some buddies that are Engineers. One was a Combat Engineer in the Army with me. And some others served in the USAF. So I guess in the USA, not all Engineers are Pacifists ! |
Vostok17 | 01 May 2017 7:02 a.m. PST |
Hello, Legion 4! In general, impassability is a nasty thing. I also nearly drowned the tank once in a puddle, which seemed shallow. Well, I'm talking about civil engineers. However, among them not all pacifists |
Legion 4 | 01 May 2017 7:17 a.m. PST |
Yeah our sister Mech Bn sunk a couple of M113s in the ROK. While training river crossing ops along the Imjin River. My buddy who was a Combat Engineer was a Mechanical Engineer before he got in the Army. While my USAF buddies got the Engineering degrees after they got out. So yeah, I really think it depends on the individual. |
Vostok17 | 01 May 2017 7:40 a.m. PST |
Hello, Legion 4! I hope they could pull them ashore? Naturally. The human factor has not been canceled. |
Legion 4 | 01 May 2017 8:38 a.m. PST |
Yes they had M88 Heavy Recovery Vehicles on both sides of the River. And both had cables attach to the front and rear of the M113s. But unfortunately about 3 of the crew in one of the M113s didn't make it. Sadly … Yes, you can't disregard operator error, mechanical failure, etc., etc. is always around. |
Vostok17 | 01 May 2017 9:05 a.m. PST |
Hello, Legion 4! Yes, incidents in particular end in extremely unpleasant consequences. As they say, the field manuals are written not in ink, but in blood. |
Legion 4 | 01 May 2017 1:29 p.m. PST |
As they say, the field manuals are written not in ink, but in blood. That a great saying and it is very true ! In many exercise, etc., men were lost. Like rubber boats over turn, vehicles roll over, parachutes malfunction, aircraft crash, ammo goes off at the wrong place & wrong time, etc., etc. … But those like us know, no matter how much you try … sometimes bad things happen, sadly. |
Lion in the Stars | 01 May 2017 8:19 p.m. PST |
Thanks, UsmanK! Pretty nasty gun for 1960. |
Vostok17 | 02 May 2017 1:01 p.m. PST |
Hello, Legion 4! Well, here, alas, there's nothing to be done. In any case, Murphy's Laws always work, and at the most unpleasant moment… Hello, Lion in the Stars! In the series, she did not go. It was only put on heavy tanks that did not go into mass production (actually Object 279, as well as Object 278, Object 277 and Object 770). |
Legion 4 | 02 May 2017 2:58 p.m. PST |
Yep, Murphy is always around … awaiting the "right" time to raise his ugly head ! |
