on your bases? I have not because sometimes my figures are in urban environments and other times in Norman bocage. to strike a balance, I have used earth color mixed into fine grit matt medium and then some random small stones which could either be building rubble or in a field. any opinions on whether to add a limited amount of grass?

I tend to use a bit of grass, either flock or the static grass clumps. And some small stones, etc.

I use flock, 'tufts', rocks, gravel, and the occasional flowering shrub, depending on figure and mood.

Static grass, tufts and flowers.

Mine are all on grassy ground. They are mostly for periods that are pre-20th Century when urban areas were considerably less urbanised….

I'm switching to transparent bases for just this reason…

I grass all my bases.

I am doing Star Wars figures at the mo, and have just flat painted the bases a pale brown while I decide on grass or something else!

Saxondog25 Apr 2017 11:22 a.m. PST

Depends on the figure. Most figures….yes, I do. Grass, flowers, etc….. recently did a few for Frostgrave. These have NO grass. So, it all depends on the figure.

Most of my minis have some type of grass on them.

White glue, dribble varying shades and grades of ballast on it, then dump a load of mixed static grass and flocking on it. I try to not make them look like Capability Brown laid everything out.

Vigilant25 Apr 2017 12:51 p.m. PST

Depends. Where I know the majority of use will be outside urban areas, e.g desert or grasslands then I use suitable textures, flock etc. Where there is going to be multi-use I am mounting individual figures on clear perplex bases.

goragrad25 Apr 2017 1:38 p.m. PST

Have some, haven't used it yet.

Also flowers.

No. I used to, but switched to desert or concrete rubble. Even if their fighting on grass, it still looks better than my crap attempts at grass.

I try to base consistently for any given period/scale combination and have boards and terrain to match. So WWII 15mm is all earth/sand for North Africa and the Middle East, and if that's not always right for parts of Tunisia or Syria, c'est la guerre. All the 28mm SF is based on rubble with a board to match, and horse & musket (and fantasy) are based on green grass No campaigning until there's forage for the horses.
Barsoom, of course…

I mix static grass with my turf blend, rather than in clumps. Seems to give a better look of random long blades

IMHO Transparent bases bring even more attention to themselves, then a mismatch of colours of base and playing surface. I flock and only get creative with 28s or really fairly large empty bases. I would rather paint another fig or make a new building.

Anthropicus26 Apr 2017 8:42 a.m. PST

All my bases have at least static grass or pre-glued tufts, usually over a brybrushed, textured mud or dirt.

For 6mm, I tend to just fill it with static grass. I do it in two layers, mixing from a few different tubs to get a more naturalistic look.

You can see examples of both approaches here: link

I use all kinds of grasses, tufts and such, that I make myself.

People seem to like the result.

PeterH27 Apr 2017 12:45 p.m. PST

so no real consensus here!! that's okay, in a way it confirms that there are many things which drive folks to do/not do and you just have to go with what you personally like. I think for now I will stick with the bare dirt and a stone here and there. Can always add some greenery down the road.

tkdguy27 Apr 2017 10:42 p.m. PST

Only for a few miniatures. One of my miniatures was missing a foot, so I used grass to hide the missing limb.

tkdguy07 May 2017 5:05 p.m. PST

If you prefer artificial grass to natural grass, here are a couple of ways to make it. The examples were used for terrain, but you can probably adapt them when basing miniatures

This is the single hardest question I could be asked right now…. I am really fighting the dilemma I am having….

I have always based my figures appropriately for where they are played…. they match their scenery…. Now.. with all of these games that can use cross over figures.. Frostgrave (snow), Mordheim (rubble), Ghost Archipelago (sand, jungle), SAGA (snow, sand, woods)… I am really torn…. I think the basing really adds to the figures appearance…. and then I was introduced to clear plastic bases….

Clear plastic bases mean your figures could be used in almost any setting…. Now.. do I go back and rebase 1oo's of figures? or switch over now?
