Good review. I agree entirely about the 'wow factor' games. My interest is historical games and, for me, there were too many fantasy/Sci-fi games featuring a big building on an three-foot square table! Your idea about ticketing is a good one. The whole idea of late entry could have a lot done with it. For example, about three in the afternoon I was outside the hall in the main concourse. A mother and her ten-ish year old son were walking by. They had obviously been at one of the other events or signing on at the marathon or something. The son looked in the Salute hall and wondered what it was to his mum. They went and spoke to one of the Warlords on 'gate' duty. Then they wandered off again. Now, to me, it would seem worthwhile letting someone like that in for free. The show was winding down anyway and the boy may have liked what he saw and go on to be involved in the hobby? Just a thought…. |

I agree with your last point Cerdic. At Claymore a late arrival such as a Mum and son would probably be waved in no charge. |

That's a pretty nice haul! I think gaming has largely adapted to the fact that most people don't have a 6x8 foot gaming table. Not so much gratification as the market responding. I think scifi and fantasy gamers have just been better about responding to those market demands. It took Chain of Command before WW2 gamers stopped sneering at ww2 skirmishing it seemed. Though for me, the reason to play at a convention is exactly to do those big games you can't do elsewhere :-) |
