"For more than three years now, I've been tracking the U.S. Navy's progress toward building a working electromagnetic railgun prototype -- a Mach 6 cannon reputedly capable of striking targets 110 miles away with pinpoint accuracy. Each railgun projectile would cost about $25,000 USD to produce -- and if you're keeping track, then yes, success on the railgun project would yield a weapon boasting nearly twice the 67-mile range of Boeing's (NYSE:BA) Harpoon II missile but costing just 1/48th the Boeing missile's $1.2 USD million cost…"

Yeah, I think Who put a Dalek on that ship?? was a statement, not a question. 120-ish mile range! Wow, reach out and touch someone…with a vengeance. |

Still have to "vote no confidence" in the rail-gun concept at this point. From everything I've heard, they still haven't found a way to avoid burning out the rails. Can't get very many shots off before you have to replace the barrel… Compare that to the typical 5" gun – thousands of shots before major service. |

120 mile range? Puny an ICBM has 40 000km range and we already know they work. Build more ICBMs say I. |

Railguns at least have the advantage of not requiring a warning to Russia before use (unless we're using them ON Russia). ICBMs tend to have a rather massive panic-inducement factor. |
