Kriegsspiel (Wargame) was a system used for training officers in the Prussian armies. The first set of rules was created already in 1812. After numerous successful Prussian campaigns in the late 1800s, (vs Austria, vs France) Kriegsspiel became more widely adopted by many militaries.

The table divided the game field into a grid system, included different terrain types, as well as making use of special gaming pieces and dice. It also included the methods to simulate fog of war and communication difficulties.
The rules set, which was modified several times established several conventions for wargaming which hold true to the present day, such as the use of maps, color-coding the opposing armies, and using umpires.

The accepted map scale was 1:8000.

The time scale was 2 minutes per one turn.

In addition to the 'gamemaster', a total of up to 10 players could play.

Obviously quoting from somewhere. Please give a reference?

The von Reisswitz Kriegspiel was published in 1824 so I don't know where you get the date of 1812 from.

Wondering what the point of this post is?

The 1812 sounds like the elder Reisswitz game that the son took over and developed further into the 1824 Kriegsspiel.

I meant the grid system. The 1:8000 scale 2 minute turns are both parts of the 1824 rules

I think the intro to Kriegspiel itself indicates "the Great Game of the High Brahmin" as the original wargame…

There were a number of 'wargames' created during the 1700s including one that was an army logistics game.
