Were trail spikes and the shafts of ramrods generally left a natural wood colour or were they painted? And for that matter were they always made of wood or did some nations use metal tools?

I'm primarily interested in Saxon artillery because that is what is on the painting table at the moment but I would be interested to know how things varied from nation to nation.

Reinhold shows black painted artillery equipment in his epic work about the Saxon armyof about 1792 – 1806.

For Prussians, at least up to 1807 blue or natural wood.

Thanks vW,

I'm doing later Saxons but since the gun carriages were still painted black it seems reasonable to suppose that the tools were as well.
