"…On November 16, 1941, members of "C" Force arrived in Hong Kong. They received a warm welcome with considerable fanfare. Hong Kong's newspapers recorded the excitement generated by the presence of the Canadians, (see illustration one). "The Hong Kong Telegraph" had its first ever Sunday edition, indicating its importance to the citizens, many of whom were uneasy about Japan's activity not far from them on the Chinese mainland. The Force was under the command of Brigadier John K. Lawson, MC and consisted of a Brigade Headquarters and two regiments, the Royal Rifles of Canada (RRC) and the Winnipeg Grenadiers (WG), a total of 1,974 men and two nursing sisters. The first VC awarded to a Canadian soldier was to Sergeant-Major John Osborn of the Winnipeg Grenadiers for his action in the Battle of Hong Kong. link |
