Anyone else notice that there don't seem to be a lot of responses to posts on this forum recently? Is there something going on, or are people just busy?

Tango0121 Apr 2017 11:56 a.m. PST

DELETED BECAUSE OF THE BUG…………..

Old Contemptibles21 Apr 2017 11:59 a.m. PST

I think that partly answers your question.

I've noticed it. Not just responses, but a decline in interesting content too. (Unless you like bayonets.)

Personal logo deadhead Supporting Member of TMP21 Apr 2017 12:15 p.m. PST

That is a very pertinent question.

Folk have previously lamented the loss of individuals who did contribute greatly…real experts. Because responses could get so vitriolic maybe….. simple things like the effective vs maximum range of any nation's cannon should be the subject of debate, not abuse.

I have several times pronounced here on subjects (such as French Light Regiments not using drummers, or French Cavalry bands not riding greys, for example) and been proved totally wrong. Ignorance of any subject has never prevented me acting as an expert……but many folk feel insulted if challenged.

Maybe we are running out of topics? Maybe we are beginning to repeat ourselves? maybe it is getting easier to research questions on line?

I still find this forum brilliant

devsdoc21 Apr 2017 2:36 p.m. PST

This Forum has given me so much information, A good friend from the States, as I'm from G.B. would have never of met him but for this Forum.
I also found a good "pushing sail ships on a table" friend to play with, on this forum. Both are important to me as personal and wargaming friends.
At this time I'm using the two old posts on how to kit-bash the Airfix Victory (Very helpful).
I open this site frist when I get home from work. Only one person has got my back-up in all the time I've been on this site, I find that is not too bad.
My only wish is I could put photo's up from my computer onto this site. I have tried a number of times and find my I.T. skills are not up to it.
So I' m a big fan of this site and hope it goes on.

I've been noticing that myself.
My blog continues to get pretty good traffic, so people are getting there from here and a few other places. That said, over the years I have noticed that the level of conversation on TMP tends to ebb and flow in quality, but usually not in quantity. I do feel that right now there is somewhat of a drought of good commentary, to the point where, for the first time in years, I've begun looking around at different forums to see what's out there and what people are talking about. From what I've seen in my internet wanderings, there really isn't anything else like TMP, if you're looking for concentration of information and enthusiasm about the hobby. This makes it somewhat worrying to me as regards the hobby in general.

Maybe this should be a sign to me that I need to get out there and get some real games in…

Is that gang at Frothers still around? I gather that in the past they had an issue with this forum and there was some sort of competition going on, but these guys never seem to come up any more in conversation.

I spend more time on the LAF than I do here- it just seems a great deal more personal

Eric The ShedWhat's LAF

devsdoc: Are you talking about the Airfix 1/600 scale Victory? Nice! I've done maybe 20 of them, making 74's up to 120 gunners. I also converted Constitutions and that British frigate. What a joy doing those conversions.

devsdoc22 Apr 2017 3:57 a.m. PST

d88mm1940,
Yes I've cut mine down to a 74 and to the water-line. It is rigged too standing rigging and I'm doing ratlines now. Wish I could just "Click and post" photo's from my computer to this site! Sorry, tried to post a number of times and gave up!
Who makes the British frigate? I'm not happy with the idea of cutting down the "Victory" to make one. That said if the rat-lines don't work this maybe the last one I do!
At this time it is stopping me from making my 1-2400 scale Trafalgar fleets (Only 40 to go).
I would like to have 1-600 models for ship duels, 1-1200 for squadron games and 1-2400 for fleet battles. One day!
For me modelling is a part of the hobby and dream of the all the finished models on the table. O.K. 1-1200 scale are done the rest are in the pipe-line or on the stocks in my shipyard.

Sorry, to be clear, I'm meant the blogs forum in particular, not the miniature page itself.

Oh wow, the bug even cross posted beyond the blog forum. Wow.

Personal logo deadhead Supporting Member of TMP22 Apr 2017 7:38 a.m. PST

Devsdoc.

Many folk have asked what you do. How do you post a picture to appear on this forum?

You need a jpeg image. Anything eg PNG is easily converted on your PC. If you cannot I will show you how.

It then needs to be available on the internet

This forum cannot store the image itself, but it can automatically open a link so the image appears……if you have saved it to an accessible site.

If you have a blog it will just appear as "LINK"…no picture

If you have saved it to Flickr or Imageshack (which this forum did once recommend) or any sharing site you only have to cut and paste the link. You will have to pay a very small annual subscription, I think well worth it, if you have many pics to show. The picture comes up

Personal logo deadhead Supporting Member of TMP22 Apr 2017 8:45 a.m. PST

Lord Ashram

you may have accidentally expanded the scope of your question, but the responses suggest that there is this worry that TMP itself is not seeing the degree or quality of response that was once the case.

It still seems a question well worth posing. The stats however suggest the Napoleonic Forum remains the most active, so maybe "Never mind the quality, feel the width!"?

It was the HMS Shannon, a 32 gunner, I believe. It was a welcome addition. I only had a couple, but that was all I needed. The Constitution when properly cut up also filled some gaps, ie 50 gun razee.

Also, I use screen door mesh for ratlines. it's already black and looks convincing. I'll try to post some pics this weekend, if I get some time…

1968billsfan22 Apr 2017 11:28 a.m. PST

One thing to realize is that the "search" button does cut down on new topic. Often, I can find the answer to my question from there. Often, I can find that the topic has been argued in multiple 40+ post threads that covers it in more detail then I want to read. Victims of our own success?

LAF is the Lead Adventure Forum – but I probably shouldn't advertise here

devsdoc22 Apr 2017 7:20 p.m. PST

d88mm1940, That was the one I have always talked about to friends. No one had seen or heard of her. I'm so happy that she was around and as a water-line model too. Now I must hunt for 2 of them at a O.K. price. See Vol, I'm not MAD!
Deadhead, Once you start on about "Flickr" etc, that is when I go cross-eyed and sweat! Vol has tried to help me so many times too. I'm an old-dog who still finds it hard to do all this I.T. stuff. That I can e-mail, get photo's off my camera onto my computer is a big thing for me. I have had all the sites I like "bookmarked". I have a mobile-phone in my van that is only used for me to phone from or it is turned off. My mobile-phone is a phone, not a "E" thingy. I may get it all one day. It is just not my thing.

I think the forum is brilliant but there are perhaps a shortage of shiny new things to talk about. A lot of stuff is held back for the release at Salute. Then of course David Browns new rules out in May will be something else to discuss.

Volunteer Fezian25 Apr 2017 11:29 p.m. PST

d88mm1940

Very nice looking fleet. I have bought several 1/450 & 1/500 scale models, intending to do the same. I just haven't had the nerve to try one yet. Rory is much braver than I in that department. The price for these models has skyrocketed over the last couple of years and I can't figure out why. I was buying them for $3 USD to $9 USD as little as two years ago. Now you are lucky to see one for $20 USD plus $11 USD in shipping costs.

Lord Ashram26 Apr 2017 7:12 a.m. PST

How did this become a ship post? Is that because of the bug, and a ship post got put in here?

Deadhead, Glad I gave your son's a bit of fun, and I'm not alone.
d88mm1940, Thanks for the photo's, Just done the rat-lines on my Airfix model. They are on! but not so happy with them, I see yours and am more unhappy.
I'm happy to see the model of H.M.S. Shannon. I was beginning to think I was going mad and she was only in my head! The price of her now is very high. Wish Airfix would do her again.
Thanks for your help.
I only want 4 or so ships for fun. I think any cash I have will go on 1-2400 scale.

Lord Ashram,

"How did this become a ship post? Is that because of the bug, and a ship post got put in here?"

No, you are absolutely right, this thread was hijacked because….

"Not just responses, but a decline in interesting content too."

So devsdoc & d88mm1940 shoved some interesting content into this thread and look what happened! Responses! ;-)

Paul's Bods:
Ha! that was great Paul!

Pauls Bods30 Apr 2017 3:38 a.m. PST

@ Vol.The Bug was making the thread a bit Stern and it was becoming an oar-deal

SgtPrylo01 May 2017 11:24 a.m. PST

I'd be curious to know if there is truly a decline in posts overall or if it's a matter of the topics expanding so much that we just don't see the majority of posts we used to. One topic we might have followed before has now become 5 topics. This naval topic is a good example. Anyone remember the battle to get a separate thread for us? Before this, we'd be in the Napoleonic forum, now we have our own – and the result is less posts in the original home for us.

Old Contemptibles01 May 2017 12:17 p.m. PST

It is exactly what I been warning about to anyone who would listen. TMP has been watered down or diffused by the large number of boards that have been created over the past several years.

Put everyone in a group bubble and you don't get all the dynamics of an active and robust community. You want the excitement back? Get rid of some of these boards and cancel any future ones.

devsdoc01 May 2017 2:41 p.m. PST

No! No! and No! To have a board that is for what I like, for things I'm interested in is GREAT! To come home and go straight to the board(s) I wish too without wading through threads/posts that I do not wish too look at or spend time opening and closing is heaven. To plough through things I have no interest in would stop me using T.M.P. If a board is slowing down or showing little action, please try and put it with a other board that matches it if possable.Better that than lose it.
Be safe
Rory

Lord Ashram01 May 2017 7:25 p.m. PST

Eh. I agree, there are too many boards. Not saying "only have one!" but you don't need a dozen moderns boards, you know?

Btw, again, meant the blog forum.

Personal logo deadhead Supporting Member of TMP02 May 2017 1:05 a.m. PST

Apologies as I may have triggered this. I saw this on the Napoleonic Discussion and did not notice the use of Blog in the title. Never entirely sure what that means anyway but I think a really useful discussion has emerged. so thanks for kicking it off!

SgtPrylo02 May 2017 11:14 a.m. PST

It's a good discussion regardless of whether we are focused on 'blog' or not. I'm with devsdoc on this, I want to check the boards I'm interested in, not wade through endless reams of stuff I'm not.

For Rallynow: which boards? Each is probably someone's pet board. There will be no good agreement on which ones. There's no good answer.

Old Contemptibles02 May 2017 11:45 a.m. PST

Do a search. That way you are more likely of getting the discussion you want.

Which boards? That as always is up to Bill. Ultimately TMP is not a democracy.

Old Contemptibles02 May 2017 12:09 p.m. PST

"Each board is someone's Pet board."

So what? Its not like once a board is deleted you can't have the same discussion on a more general board. I like to get the view points of others who don't have that subject on their radar. I used to learn something new all the time but lately we are all in our own little cubical.

Old Contemptibles02 May 2017 12:18 p.m. PST

There are other places on the web where you can stay in a bubble. Here it is interesting to me, to see the variety on display all the time. I think it is great when the "Empire" fans and everyone else has a conversation, heated discussion or down right verbal death matches. It was fun back then. Those days are over now. More's the pity.

devsdoc02 May 2017 3:11 p.m. PST

I'm sorry you are unhappy Rallynow. But I need info and too talk to folks that know about my bit of this great hobby. I would say that painting, rigging and playing Napoleonic ships is very different from the main stream of our hobby. This is a small nitch of a small hobby. So to see and hear from like minded people liking Napoleonic ships is great and makes me feel special and not alone. Try going to a club with your model ships to find 40K, Bolt Action and if you are lucky an Napoleonic land game. The comments are Hmm! nice, but we don't play that! Yes! this is my "Bubble". Sorry but like this site.

Old Contemptibles02 May 2017 3:40 p.m. PST

I'm not unhappy. Who said anything about getting rid of your board. I said get rid of some of these boards. Napoleonic ships, yep they need a board. Two Mexican-American War boards, not so much.

devsdoc02 May 2017 6:17 p.m. PST

Sorry if I misunderstand you. Yet a new thread is asking to put ALL naval boards into one. So now folks are talking of getting rid of this Napoleonic ship board.

OK, so how come you guys can get ratlines in brass?

I could once get fantastic stuff from White Ensign Models for WWII? Anything from Arizona to Bismarck to KGV.

But why will no one produce something for Napoleonics,…..one single sheet of things like some eagles or grenades in brass for a shabraque corner? A crowned N would be too much to expect, I know. Numbers for the portmanteaux….

Gosh, even not French stuff!

if only folk would realise how many they could sell.

OK, I also do understand the argument that wargamers are not that bothered and want to just get their units onto a table.

I too used to think that was how they thought, but am now convinced, whilst numbers do count, there are some folk out there who would welcome anything that made superb modelling that bit easier.

Brass fittings are long… long.. overdue for Napoleonic 28mm figures
