Was strolling through Walmart the other day, and I took some pics of some useful things for wargamers. Like my post about Michaels Crafts, I'm sure many of you are well aware of these items. But others may not be.

Particularly things like Xacto sets, brushes, and wooden bases are often much cheaper here than you would pay on a lot of hobby websites.

First, if you need to make water effects for terrain. Walmart has the best prices for Mod Podge that I've seen. They also now have a super high gloss version of their sealer which apparently is even glossier than their regular gloss version:

Next, brushes! I know that there will be an endless debate among modelers and gamers as to whether or not you need to buy expensive brushes for miniatures. For long-term durability, perhaps yes. However I have found that generic brushes are able to apply paint to minis. just as well as the more expensive ones do. They may go out of shape sooner, but I think in a lot of cases you can get a lot of use out cheaper brushes.

Also, a set like this is PERFECT for doing things like extensive dry-brushing which can kill a brush and put it out of shape way before its time. These cheap sets are great to have at hand for doing some of those dry-brushing parts of miniatures. You can use these for the things that destroy your brushes and you won't have to use up your expensive brushes.

These detail brush sets go for about $5.00 USD-$10.00. Every size of brush you need for small detail areas on miniatures:

Next, bases for terrain. Again, pretty obvious maybe. But these kinds of wooden shapes are found in the craft section and might be overlooked as being useful as bases for large miniatures or terrain projects of every kind. The round and ovals are $1.00 USD, which is even cheaper than Michaels Crafts:

Finally, your basic Xacto set. $19.95 USD. I've seen this for sale as much as $30.00 USD in some places. Other websites have if for as cheap as $15.00 USD but when you add shipping charges to it it's a wash any way.

Right here for $20.00 USD and you're out the door. Walmart also carries extra blade packs:

Do you know how big the circle plaque is?

I stopped in Michael's the other day and got a couple of circles, but they had holes and strings tied through them. They were a dollar, but slightly bigger than I wanted, and I have to fill the holes.

Never mind, I see it says 7 inches (or "7 in.") in the picture.

I bought "Road tape" at Wally for $5. USD It's 20mm two lane asphalt, so far I've based about 12 feet and there's still more on the roll. In the toy section.

In Australia I've been buying just like yourself from Officeworks and Spotlight .
Bought some brushes from O'works for @$3 with a couple 3/0 + 5/0 models plus Edge or Wedge brushes which are quite good for running along straps when painting trousers and jackets .
The MDF place mats from Spotlight in raw are good for houses bases or jigsaw them for Tree stands .
Useless DVD's from unwanted presents come in handy for tree stands too with a coverage of tile grout or hole repair plaster at @$15 for a 200ml container.
At Cheap as Chips they were selling rubber glue $2.00 AUD which I found was really good for Woodland Scenic Armature trees .
I read on a Railway Forum ( i actually google'd " Other HOB-E-TAC version s" and found the site ) that HobeTac wasnt drying and didnt meet its Sales jargon .I was impressed how the Rubber Glue was tacky for 10minutes ,spreadable even stringy which worked really well .
Then cans of Rust-O-Leum in Matt Black for Primer at $11.00 AUD I save half compared to Army Painter Cans .
Then you dont mind browsing in the Hobby Shop after that and dont feel guilty taking a couple of packets of sprues
NB all prices in Australian Dollar
