Can anyone point me to a source that shows something of the topography of the battlefields for Operation Battleaxe. Specifically I'm looking for some information on Point 206 and the Hafid Ridge /Point 208 area. Ideally said source would not cost me $100 USD and require a trip to the rare book store |

Oh, I just bought Tank Combat in North Africa. When I get home, I'll see if it has what you want. |

In Tank Combat, there is a chapter on Battleaxe. It deals extensively with the units involved and detailed reports from both sides. Not any real discussion of the terrain. There is a topo map "Actions of 6th Bn. Royal Tank Regiment on 15 June 1941." It is from Bir Ghirba to Hagfet el Charruba. There is a 200 line and a number of other elevation points are noted. There is also a topo map "Actions of 6th Bn. Royal Tank Regiment 16 June 1941." This map covers the area (to the south? below?) the previous map. Hope this helps. |

I have several books on the North African campaign, including the British HMSO Official History series for the theatre. None have topographic mais, save a small sketch map in Barry Pitt's Crucible of War volume 1. Hadid ridghe is just a smudge running east-west. The text describes it on page 299 as "consisted in fact of three gentle crests and between them lay the German anti tank guns" |
