Was one of the small pulps like Astounding Sci Fi. Had on the cover (or maybe inside but I doubt it because I remember it in color) two armed aliens standing at the bottom of a staircase in an old early 20th century-ish house. They were mostly tentacles – bipedal upright, but each leg and each arm splayed out into multiple tenticles (no sucker cups!) and the perspective was the viewer looking down the stairs at them as they seemed to consider coming upstairs. Google Fu has deserted me so if anyone can steer me to this I would appreciate it. |

The big 2 back then were Astounding Stories and Analog…if that's any help. |

Astounding changed its name to Analog about 1959,IIRC. In the 70's, there would have been Amazing, F&SF,Galaxy, and maybe Azimov's,which started in 1977. 'If' ceased publication in 1974. All were digest size. The description makes it sound like Amazing, unless it was humorous, which would make it more likely F&SF. You could try an image search of the titles, although it's hit or miss. I hope that helps a little. I don't recognize it, myself. |

This may be it, the image is a bit small.

And I'm amazed at times as to what pops up from my memory when asked a question like this. I recall the cover and barely remember that I did read the story. Must admit it is a striking cover. Must be why I knew exactly what cover you were referring to! |

I'm glad Gamertom found it. Now I want to search for some of those for myself. Great inspiration for games of Retro Raygun. |

Indeed. Since seeing this in the late '70s when my uncle gave me a copy, I have always envisioned them as Stardate 3000 zanthorians.
