A Good-Looking Army in a Reasonable Amount of Time

Painting a wargaming army is a completely different beast from painting a single miniature for display.

While I can see the way it's intended to be used, if I'm already cutting down into my board, I'd just make my own rivers rather than dealing with trying to fit theirs into it.

If it had pieces that could connect to the edges so the entire thing could sit ontop of the table, I'd be more likely to buy them.

Agree,they made them very unconventionally.Surprised they didn't make them so they lay flat rather than sunk in. I'm a huge fan but as much as I like these(and I do) I don't think the extra work is worth it…

I really love Tabletop World, but I think this particular product is a bit of a misstep on their part. Far too expensive for what you're getting.

Plus the fact that as has been said above, you have to drop these down into some kind of sheet like insulation foam, they can't be used on the surface of a terrain board itself. That feature right there cancels out their worth.

I achieved the exact same thing with MDF board with 1" thick insulation foam glued to it and simply carved those river channel shapes into the foam. Also, with this technique you can paint the surface of the MDF a dark color and then simply apply a thin layer of a gloss sealer like Mod Podge or just gloss varnish. You don't have to do any resin pouring.

With these Tabletop world pieces you're going to have to pour AT LEAST four or five layers of resin until you get enough depth. Just not practical. And worst of all, these aren't modular. Once you set them into a terrain piece, they can't be moved or rearranged any way.

Just do it this way, this is what I did:

This effect was achieved with NO RESIN whatsoever. All this is is a coat dark paint with a single layer of Mod Podge gloss sealer dabbed over the surface of the MDF board. And it achieves the same exact thing!

The other thing that REALLY bugs me is that their water mill is designed the exact same way. The river channel piece you get with the mill has to be set down into a layer of foam.

In other words, you can't just take the mill by itself and use it with your own river sections because I don't think it would lay flat, the mill's wheel protrudes down too low. The mill itself appears to designed to be used ONLY with their river section. I could be wrong about that, I'm sure with some modification work you could use the mill with your own terrain. But they didn't make it easy to do it.

Actually, just looking at photos of it, it looks you could use the mill with your own river sections, you'd just have to pay attention to the depth of your sections so that the wheel doesn't hit the bottom of the river channel.

You can order the mill without the river piece. The wheel with that version is trimmed to sit flat on the table.

@Don,

Oh really? Wow, I stand corrected! That's great to know, it actually makes me consider getting it!

Thanks for the info…
