I'm just curious, but I'm considering a project playing every Kriegsmarine surface action of WW2. As many are destroyer actions I was thinking of 1:2400 for the extra detail, but then I thought about 1:1800. I still plan to use smaller scales for the battleship actions. Looking at what's available I'm surprised that so many 'standard' units are missing. Okay; one can find battleships and cruisers, but I can't seem to find the 1934A destroyers, for example. This leads me to wonder if anyone who is 'seriously' interested in WW2 naval warfare actually uses 1:1800 as a scale? Much as I do enjoy the high-profile River Plate or Denmark Straits actions it is a bit limiting if the ships for the Arctic Convoys or the English Channel are missing. It does seem to be that 1:1800 seems to be aimed at the Victory at Sea/Axis and Allies market. For destroyer actions 1:1800 does look like a good scale, especially in the Arctic where visibility was rarely more than 7-8 miles, so am I missing something? Nick |

I dropped my other 1:2400 and 1:6000 to go 1:1800. As Wackmole9 stated, most of us serious about the scale finish out our needs on Shapeways. That's how I built out my Mers El Kebir French Fleet (including the proper aircraft). |

Frankly I didn't even realize there was a significant 1:1800 presence in the arena. Stuck in the 1:1200 I started with and the 1:2400 I moved on to I suppose. |

Im going the other way, I only game with 1/6000 anymore. |

I think the Axis & Allies War at Sea sets are 1/1800 scale, which drove a number of people to do ships in that scale on Shapeways. I think most of the battleships and carriers in those sets looks nice, but not the destroyers. Although, I have been tempted to get some 1/1800 scale destroyers from Shapeways to do destroyer and light cruiser actions. |

That's basically where I'm coming from too Dave; 1:1800 for destroyer and cruiser actions (e.g. Arctic Convoys and Channel night actions) and 1:6000 for the heavies (especially the Mediterranean). I'm just surprised that some of the common ships are unavailable from any supplier. As an example, I'm considering a project where I'll work through the 59 Kriegsmarine surface actions involving destroyers or larger. Now the first engagement against Poland and ironically it's easy to set up – the Polish ships and the KM 1934 destroyers are readily available. The second action is against the Royal Navy – two JKN class destroyers and i can't seem to find them. Mongoose used to do them but no more and i can't find them on Shapeways, despite the class seeing a lot of action in WW2. But then again i find Shapeways really difficult to search! If anyone is using 1:1800 I'd love to see some AARs and photos… |

Ecclesiastes, you have delivered in spades! They are beautiful. Queen Catherine, nope, I'm not asking for complete fleets, I'm just surprised at the gaps. |
