If I'm starting from scratch, and wanting to play at the individual vehicles and infantry team level, which rules would be best ?

Is Team Yankee the way to go ?

Try Battlefront WW2 from Fire&Fury games. It starts at the squad level 2 figures make a squad and three stands of two figures make a platoon. My group uses the basic rules to play Vietnam, Arab Israeli, and now Cold Wars. It works really well and I like it much better than Flames of War. It uses cards, so Infantry will have a card and it will show how far they go and what they do for shooting ect. I have included links to most of all the information you might need.

So the cards I picked for an example did not show up.

Haven't played TY, but from what I've read on this site it is more of a fictional account than based on actual forces and tactics. Fistful of TOWs and Sabre Squadron are both popular – I like the latter, haven't played bathe former. Force on Force can also be used. It depends on the scale you want to play.

I'm looking at 15mm, and the recent ranges released has me very interested.

I play TY which is very popular obviously, but just because it's popular and readily available doesn't mean it's the right choice for you. I would suggest reading up on all the alternatives available, not just descriptions of rules mechanics but also reviews and AAR's to see which one fancies you the most.

TY is based on Harold Coyle's novel by the same name and covers early to mid 1980's CW. It is not a highly detailed simulation but a "gamey" system designed to be accessible and fun. It is the CW counterpart to Flames of War. So if you don't like FOW you may not like TY either.

Two questions:

Do you want to play in clubs etc with strangers? Strong vote for TY then.

How many figures do you want on the table? FFT will handle much bigger armies, if thats a concern.

Games the size of FoW would be ideal, and I do get the point about TY being a bit too much like FoW.

Sabre Squadron seems to have that most inciting option, a try-out set for free ….

Battlefront WW-II will give a good game on roughly the same size area as FoW. IBFWW2 is more toward the simulation end vs the game end. More off-board assets, but more inline with what a unit would have real access to.

Nice thing is that you are not bound to rules once you have the figures. I used Combined Arms (Command Decision) for the OOB for my forces. Gives me the right numbers of equipment for TY or BFWW2 as well (with left overs). A company for TY or BFWW2 works out to be the same numbers for a CD Battalion. Have fun!

I think Weasel is being a bit self-deprecating, individual vehicles and infantry teams are ideally suited to "No End in Site". Alternatively you could go for Force on Force, particularly "Cold War goes Hot".

Gutroth, Sabre Sqn is my choice, don't forget they also have a website with chat forums,

Tally Ho!

I'd be happy to flog No End in Sight if you want to get on a lower level. Its really intended for the platoon level infantry fight with some supporting vehicles, rather than platoons of tanks rumbling into the Fulda Gap.

Is Sabre Squadron optimised for 15mm ? All the photos on the website are 6mm, and I don't want to play that size.

GeoffQRF15 Apr 2017 3:56 a.m. PST

SabreSquadron is written both ways. If you look at his AARs (on the website) you will find several 15mm games (which I may be over enthusiastic about as he's using our 15mm range) :-)

Very tempting Geoff, but until I identify the rule set I want to use, I don't know how many of what to buy ….

nickinsomerset15 Apr 2017 1:59 p.m. PST

Gut,

we play Sabre Sqn in both 6mm and 20mm,

Tally Ho!
