At the end of our last session, two Confederate divisions had grabbed a toe-hold on Cemetery Hill. There was one last daylight turn left for July 2. Then a night interval and three daylight turns for July 3. It went down to the last turn link

I'm interested to see that BBB seems to have stuck for the long haul with your group. Do you think it would slow down too much if the scale was reduced to the "F&F standard" of 200 infantry / 8 guns per stand? Cheers, Christopher |

The scenario we played was 1,000 troops / 24 guns per stand. 5 times that many stands would not fit on the table and would certainly take a lot more time to play. And we don't have that many figures. Critically, all of the Fencibles like the rules. We are a fussy bunch and any one person refusing to play the rules has a virtual veto. |

Christopher, BBB's scale is 'elastic' so that however large the battle, it scales to fit on a (usually) 6'x4' table and can be played in (usually) an evening or a long afternoon. To achieve that, you have to adjust troop scale, ground scale and time scale all in due proportion. If you multiply the number of stands by 5, you will need to change the table area by about the same – roughly doubling its length and breadth – and you then probably need to make the game last twice as many turns. More troops and more turns means more player-hours to play. I have seen this done with the Koniggratz scenario from the Bloody Big European Battles scenario book. Andrew doubled the number of stands and made the table ~50% longer. Consequently the game lasted significantly longer than with the standard proportions. I think it is in this newly published book: link There are scenarios where a troop scale of maybe 250 men per stand is more suitable. Some such are already in the BBB Yahoo group files, eg Tacna from the War of the Pacific. But I wouldn't advise it for Gettysburg unless you want to entertain more players than usual and have plenty of time and space to do so.
