Say I want to print up some really small, detailed pieces, dealing with millimeters. I'm having a hard time finding a service that can do it. For that matter, I'm finding it difficult to find into online that explains what the relative detail levels of the different technologies are. There are some, for example, that claim to print at a micron-resolution, but it's impossible to find the services online. Am I missing something? |

Key Characteristics - Ultra-fine resolution with layers as thin as 16 microns (.0006") - Ability to print moving components - Smooth surface finish, great for painting link |

I saw their website, I need to get a quote from them still. I found a guy on 3dHub who whipped me up something in Rigur 450, the guy said that the model came out pretty well but that he didn't have a picture in sharp enough resolution for me to see. So I have to wait. When they say 16 microns, I think that refers to the vertical layer height, not the two horizontal axis. Those are a lot rougher- its hard to find someone who can print a wall under 2mm with any sort of resolution. I'm trying though… |

I would also recommend visionproto. They printed some 2mm high fleur-de-lis for me for use on Sisters of Battle helmets. |

I sent my file to visonproto- Here's hoping. |

Visioproto already called me back and left a msg saying they could probably do my file. Not sure on price yet. I still need to call back. I have a pretty amitious plan, not sure if I can pull it off yet. It really depends on the price per part he quotes me. I've had semi-luck with FDM printing, but its not quite as crisp as I would like. So, we will see how pv comes out. Worst case scenario I can still make a master off what they produce and cast my pieces traditionally. |

Ok, visionproto got back to me by phone the other day, within a few hours. Great guy. He explained that his SLA technology can perfectly replicate my pieces, but it's expense. $25 USD for one, and less depending on how many I order. So, if I go with him, I'm going to need casting done, and these will be masters. Not quite as exciting as my original plan to print up an entire army for a low price… although I can still do that, albeit at a much lower resolution. I'm really debating how I want to proceed here. Casting will be a major outlay of effort, and I'll probably have to sell the things to make up for the initial outlay of costs. I haven't seen how much casting might run me yet, because it's a bit harder to track down a caster than a 3d printer… man, I have to think about this…. |
