You're very welcome, folks. I enjoy looking at airships, so I seek links and images of them from time to time. |

I've seen many of these photos, but there are a few I haven't heard of until now. The ones I haven't are quite illuminating. Thanks! Of course, I'm chagrined to admit I wasn't aware that the R33 went parasitic. Time for research! Doug |

I know it almost certainly wasn't the cause of the fire, but I'm astounded to find out the Hindenburg had a smoking room! Brilliant link! |

I do remember that; I recall airlock-like precautions, though I think it was with screen doors. Oh, well, more to add to the research. ;->= Doug |

Hindenburg and I believe R101 both had smoking rooms. The one on Hindenburg was kept at positive pressure to keep any stray hydrogen out. The steward had an electric cigarette lighter such as cars used to have. He kept control of it. If a passenger had a pipe the steward would dispense a single match to light it, being careful to ensure the fate of said match. |

"The smoking room was kept at a higher pressure than the rest of the ship so that no leaking hydrogen could enter the room, and the smoking room was separated from the rest of the passenger section by a double-door airlock…" "In reality, the pressurization of the smoking room may have been as much for public relations as for safety. The smoking room was located on B Deck, at the bottom of the ship, and since hydrogen is lighter than air any leaking gas would have escaped upward. " Apparently, my memory of screens, effective the way a screen around a miner's lamp is, was out of thin air. ;->= "…but its popularity was no doubt enhanced because it was also the location of the Hindenburg's bar."
